Mohar Varma is the old-fashioned head of the affluent Varma family from Avishkar, and the father of Sita Varma.[1]
Description
Mohar is a former member of the Consulate and mourns the loss of his stature and privileges after the Indigo Revolution.[1] Although he ensured that his daughter received the same education that any man would, he expected her to marry and settle down as a traditional wife.
Mohar has not yet shed the stations and signifiers of his former office, including a large estate and family servants — now paid, after the Indigo Revolution.[1] His consul robes are tailored and clean, his beard trimmed, and his mustache waxed. He is known for his sharp features and cruelty, callousness, and traditionalism, though Sita knows him as her doting father.
History
Before the Aether Revolt, Mohar married a woman named Madhu, whose father was a member of the Consulate, and granted him a position as Consul.[1] They had a child, Sita. Madhu died in the New Phyrexian Invasion, leaving Mohar to raise his daughter alone.[2][3] He cared greatly for his daughter and ensured that she received a comprehensive education, and the two bonded over their shared love of engineering. However, his conservative views on women and their places led Sita to conceal her true passion, street racing, from him.
Like the other Consuls, Mohar lost power after the Indigo Revolution, making it increasingly more costly to maintain his lavish lifestyle.[1] He became fixated on reactionary politics, believing that everything was better and more orderly before the Revolution. He got his chance to return to his ideal world when, on the first day of the second Ghirapur Grand Prix, Jace Beleren and Vraska broke into his house, claiming that they wanted to help him overthrow the Avishkar Assembly and reinstall the Consulate.[4] But he also wanted something in return.
Mohar recruited his friends Harshad and Rudra, with the latter being in charge of security at the Ghirapur Grand Prix. He explained that he needed a force to put an end to the race. The plan was to lay a trap for the racers at the finish line and retake Kaladesh while everybody was watching. It was thought that Gonti would be too focused on managing the race itself to notice.[2] The trap was successfully sprung, stopping the leading teams, and inadvertently revealing the identity of his daughter, who was serving as captain of Avishkar's team.[5] After the coup was hindered by a dragonstorm and Jace Beleren using many of the enforcers to recover Loot, it failed, and Mohar was sent to jail.[6]
