The Aether Hub stands at the heart of Ghirapur’s bustling district of Weldfast, where brilliant inventors and cunning renegades alike clash over the city’s most precious resource: aether. This grand facility gathers raw aether from a vast network of collection towers and routes it to the Aetherflux Reservoir for storage, and to the Aether Spire, powering everything from thopters to towering constructs. Its gleaming domes and elegant pipes are a testament to Ghirapur’s ingenuity, but its importance also makes it a constant flashpoint for sabotage and rebellion. Throughout the Inventors' Fair and the Aether Revolt, the Aether Hub played a pivotal role in the struggle between the Consulate and the renegade inventors determined to seize control of their future.
Description
The Aether Hub is a major aether collection and distribution center located in the district of Weldfast within the city of Ghirapur on the plane of Avishkar. It serves as a vital junction where raw aether, harvested by the vast network of Aether Collection Towers spread across the plane, is funneled and processed. From the Aether Hub, the aether is diverted to the massive Aetherflux Reservoir, which powers Ghirapur's countless inventions, constructs, and infrastructure. The Aether Hub also has a line to the Aether Spire, powering its many control systems and surveillance monitors.[1]
History
During the Inventors' Fair, the Aether Hub played a central role in the unfolding conflict between the Consulate and the renegades. Chandra Nalaar and Liliana Vess tailed a cloaked figure to the Aether Hub, fearing an imminent act of sabotage that would jeopardize not only the fair but also the lives of Ghirapur's people. The sabotage attempt confirmed Dovin Baan's suspicions that the renegades intended to disrupt the Consulate's tight control of aether. However, Chandra and Liliana soon discovered that the figure they pursued was not the real renegade, but instead was following another target: Chandra's mother, Pia Nalaar. At the same time, Liliana realized grimly that the man they had been following was none other than Tezzeret, whom she had a bad history with. In a tense confrontation, tensions escalated to a battle near the Aether Hub, ending with Pia's capture but leaving the Aether Hub intact and operational, at least for the moment.[1]
The Aether Hub returned to prominence during the Aether Revolt. The renegade forces, desperate to complete construction of a massive airship to counter the Consulate's control, needed vast quantities of aether. To secure this, the renegades launched an assault on the Aether Hub, capturing it with help from the Gatewatch. Once under renegade control, the hub's aether flow was redirected to fuel the airship and starve Tezzeret's hidden projects of resources. The hub thus became a crucial staging ground for further strikes against the Consulate.[1]
Tezzeret responded by dispatching the notorious Dhiren Baral to reclaim the Aether Hub. Baral engaged Chandra in a duel, using counterspells to suppress her flames and manipulate her rage. As Chandra pursued Baral away from the hub, the renegades' weakened defense allowed the Consulate to retake the facility. The Consulate restored the aether flow to the Aether Spire and Tezzeret's workshop, cutting the renegades off from their captured supply. Forced to abandon the Aether Hub, the renegades fled aboard their newly completed airship, setting the stage for their final assault on the Consulate's seat of power - the Aether Spire.[1]
