The Start of the Ice Age marked the end of the Dark Age and the start of the Ice Age on Terisiare, Dominaria.

Description

After centuries of cooling throughout the Dark Age, Terisiare was invaded by glacial masses, long winters, and cool temperatures even in its brief summers, that it entered fully into the Ice Age. Although this process was a gradual change, 450 AR marks the official start of the era of ice, when the Church of Tal dissolved and the presence of the cold gripped the entire continent.[1]

During this time, the Great Glacier filled the Lat-Nam Straits, binding the former island fast to the continent, while at the same time cutting it completely off behind massive walls of ice. The City of Shadows had to be abandoned to the ice, just like Penregon had been centuries earlier. The scholars of the city brought their belongings with them further south and west and built the new campus of the School of the Unseen on a piece of pure land that had risen from the sea floor. The school would become a hidden refuge for spellcasters for many long years. Although Almaaz remained as a nation, it was taken over by the Rigida.[2]

Ronom Glacier, Terisiare's first glacier, present even before the Brothers' War, also expanded south, reaching all the way south to the long-abandoned Great Desert, which gradually became known as the Northern Wastes. The Colekgan Mountains were completely entrapped by the ice of these two glaciers, with their southern reaches becoming known as the Ohran Ridge. On the eastern edge of Ronom, the keep of Tresserhorn was eventually built upon the ruins of the Conclave of Mages, and just to its south Ronom Lake, its water no longer flowing free, became a deadly swamp known as the Frost Marsh. The Boreal was the coldest and northernmost part of Terisiare besides the glaciers themselves. [3][4][5][6]

Raynor Glacier, the easternmost glacier on the continent, pushed down upon Storgard, eventually burying it under tons of ice. Later, Soldev would be founded on its ruins. The cold of the glacier blasted across the surface of the lands to the south, creating the harsh Adarkar Wastes, but on the shores of the continent by the ruins of old Kroog, a giant forest started thriving, fed by the glacial waters of a river. This was Yavimaya, a site of life so strong it would color the history of the plane in the millennia to come.[7]

In the east, the old city-states of the Dark faded, replaced by a hardy people known as Kjeldorans, with their capital of Kjeld founded upon the remnants of long-fallen Penregon, and the town of Krov built along the river further south. The Sardian Mountains became known as the Karplusan Mountains around this time.[8] Nearest to the dead lands of the Shattered Isles, a new land rose from the sea as ocean water became locked in the glaciers of the north. This fertile area became known as Fyndhorn, and the town of Kelsinko was built there, where the river poured into the sea.
