The Adarkar Wastes are barren wastes located on the western shore of the island of New Argive, one of the Terisian Isles on the world of Dominaria.

Description

During the Ice Age era, the Adarkar Wastes were an expansive, frozen land, barren and flat. [1] The wastes were located between the Yavimaya River and the Kher Ridges, covering the former river plain of the Mardun, and stretching into what was previously known as the Great Desert. The Wastes were populated by giants, unicorns, yetis and mysterious artificial sentinels.

After the Thaw, the wastes are a brittle white land beneath a blue sky. Snow and ice cover most of the ground, but bare spots reveal sand that has fused into great, thin slabs of glass, left from a long-ago battle of fire. The land itself is a cracked sheet of glass made of sand fused in furnacelike heat and then cooled down again.[2]

History

The Adarkar Wastes formed during the Ice Age, when the Mardun froze over, formed a larger frozen plain made of glass. The great Kjeldoran hero General Jarkeld disappeared in the Adarkar Wastes and is believed to have perished there.

At some point during the Ice Age, Jodah's last wife Aliana raised great silver statues on the grass flats of the Adarkar Wastes, for unknown purposes.[3]

Come the Thaw, the Flooding of Terisiare created the Sea of Laments, covering much of the landscape of the Adarkar Wastes, leaving only a much smaller remnant of wastes bordering the new sea.[4] While the surface of the wastes had melted and become free of ice, they were still barren, although numerous holes led to chambers and underground villages beneath the wastes.

In 3245 AR, Xantcha and Ratepe came to the Adarkar Wastes after spending three days crossing the Sea of Laments. They found a goatherd in an oasis, who pointed them southeast towards Koilos.[5]

In 3307 AR, Karn was sent to the Adarkar Wastes by the time machine during one of Urza's and Barrin's experiments, thousands of miles from Tolaria. At Urza's request, Karn gathered shards of glass from the waste and brought them back with him.[2]

During the Mirage War, Sisay located the Juju Bubble, a piece of The Legacy, in the Wastes. She took the Skyship Weatherlight there, and recovered the artifact after a fight with a mech leftover from the Brothers' War.[6]
