Part of The Broken Lands

Ifnir, the Demons' Nest is a desolate place hidden deep in the endless Broken Lands desert beyond the protection of Naktamun. It is said to be the prison where the God-Pharaoh cast out the rebellious demons who defied him long ago. Despite their banishment, these demons still wander the dunes, stalking the unwary and testing the strength of the Hekma. Their presence keeps fear alive, driving the people of Amonkhet to cling ever tightly to the promise of the trials and the afterlife.

Description

Far beyond the reach of the protective Hekma and the relative safety of Naktamun lies a forsaken region of the desert known as Ifnir, the Demons' Nest. According to the beliefs of the people of Amonkhet, the God-Pharaoh cast out all the plane's demons to this wasteland as punishment for daring to defy him long ago. Some tales say that angels drag the worst rebels and heretics into the very heart of Ifnir — a grim fate considered far crueler than simply being left to wander the deadly dunes.[1][2]

If the demons were truly imprisoned only in Ifnir, they would pose little threat to Naktamun. But they are not bound there. Many demons prowl the shifting sands of the desert, sometimes clashing violently with the gods themselves. Occasionally, these monstrous beings even test the boundaries of the Hekma. Though the barrier is designed to endure endless storms and the ceaseless advance of mummies, it can weaken rapidly under a demon's assault. When that happens, the gods and their viziers must act swiftly to hunt down or repel the threat before it breaches the city.[1]

In truth, the demons of Amonkhet, like the angels, are under the hidden dominion of Nicol Bolas. Though these creatures roamed the plane before Bolas arrived, they have since been shaped to serve his will, twisted into instruments of fear and obedience. They help maintain the dread that compels the people of Naktamun to undertake the harsh trials, all for the promise of a glorious afterlife. And for those judged most unworthy, the demons provide a fittingly horrific end.[1]

Many of the demons of Ifnir echo Bolas's terrifying form: elongated limbs and tails, vast wings, emaciated frames bristling with horns and cruel blades. Other fiendish beings bear more primal features, such as the ammits — crocodile-like demons sometimes unleashed as trials by the five gods — and the deadly scorpion demons known as soulstingers, whose venom inflicts unspeakable agony on any who feel its sting.[1]
