Foundations Jumpstart, a.k.a. Jumpstart 2025, is a supplemental Magic booster set with mostly reprints and some new cards. It was released on November 15, 2024, concurrently with the Magic: The Gathering Foundations set.[2][3]

Set details

Foundations Jumpstart is the follow-up to Jumpstart and Jumpstart 2022. The Jumpstart format mashes together themes from throughout the history of the game and lets you skip the deckbuilding part. To play a game of Jumpstart, players open two half-deck packs of twenty cards and shuffle them together to form a ready-to-play deck. The set is designed for two-player gameplay, but players can also play multiplayer with it.

Foundations Jumpstart is a Commander-, Legacy-, and Vintage-legal set, and individual cards are also legal where already available in other formats.[3]

J25 #1-29 are new non-legendary cards, #30-56 are new legendary cards with anime art, #57-80 are anime reprints, #81-95 are basic lands, #96-156 are other reprints with new art, and #157-780 are the remaining reprints. The cards numbered #1–56 are permitted in the Commander, Legacy, and Vintage formats. Returning cards with the J25 set code and numbered 57–780 are legal for play in any format where a card with the same name is permitted.[4]

Note that several new cards from the Foundations main set are categorized as reprints in Foundations Jumpstart, indicating that they originally would have had separate release dates. There is also no card with the collector number #350.[5] On the other hand, there are also several new cards in Jumpstart Foundations that are counted as reprints in the main set.

Marketing

Foundations Jumpstart is sold in 20-card Jumpstart Boosters, with 24 boosters per booster box. Each booster contains a face card (the "Pack Summary card", or "Theme insert") that indicates the pack's theme and color. The set is also sold in 2-Booster Packs ("2-Packs").

The contents of each pack fit one of 46 randomly chosen themes, with each theme having a "rarity" of common, rare, or mythic rare. Common and rare themes have multiple variations of their pack contents; there are 121 possible pack contents. All boosters contain at least one rare or mythic rare, and one in three boosters includes an extra rare. Within each pack, seven or eight of the pack's 20 cards are lands and the rest are spells. Every Foundations Jumpstart Booster contains one card with anime-inspired art.

Note that the packs and themes differ from the 10 Jumpstart packs that can be found in the Foundations Beginner Box.[3]

With Foundations Jumpstart the convention for Jumpstart set expansion codes was changed. The set is now coded after the year following the year that the product is released (J25), to keep it relevant longer.

Magic: The Gathering Arena

Alongside Magic: The Gathering Foundations, Foundations Jumpstart cards became available on Magic: The Gathering Arena. The packets in MTG Arena aren't exactly the same as those in the tabletop Foundations Jumpstart — there are some with variable card slots, and cards with an existing rebalanced version show up as the rebalanced card. All cards became available from November 12, 2024, for crafting. While the individual cards will be kept available, the set itself is only available to play through a limited-time event that runs from November 19th until December 2nd, 2024. The Foundations Jumpstart cards are legal in both Historic and Timeless.[6][7]

Themes and mechanics

46 themes range from the familiar to the curious.[5] Common themes are each represented four times in different variations among the 121 packs, rare themes twice, and mythic themes are represented only once. The rarity of a given pack should not be taken as an indication of power level; but rather how replayable the theme is. The variant decklists of a given theme always have the same general flavor, mana curve, and game plan. In addition to the White manaBlue manaBlack manaRed manaGreen mana Chaos, each color features 2 mythic themes, 3 rare themes, and 4 common themes.
