Hazoret's Monument is a legendary artifact and sacred site on the plane of Amonkhet, dedicated to the god Hazoret. It stands as both a monument to zeal and a proving ground for initiates seeking the God-Pharaoh's promised afterlife. Here, countless warriors demonstrate their devotion through brutal combat under Hazoret's watchful eye. The monument is a place of worship, trial, and final honor for the glorified.
Description
“The worthy shall rush to the God-Pharaoh’s side with relentless zeal, rising to overcome every obstacle."
— Monument Inscription
Hazoret's Monument, often called the House of Hazoret, is a massive three-tiered pyramid crowned with a jackal head carved in Hazoret’s likeness. It stands near the Luxa's headwaters in Naktamun, closer to the Gate to the Afterlife than any other monument. Hazoret's sculpted head faces the gate, as if ready to pass through it herself.[1]
The trial arena, known as the Proving Grounds, lies within the monument. Here, initiates climb the Steps of Battle — a series of rising arenas linked by narrow stairs and bridges. Each arena's terrain, beasts, weapons, and hazards can shift at Hazoret's whim. Those who fall are carried away by anointed mummies to funerary barges bound for the afterlife.
The monument's main entrance faces Bontu's Monument downriver. After the Trial of Ambition, initiates enter through massive gates into the Family Temple, where Hazoret greets them not as a distant god but as a loving mother. She lounges on cushions among fire pits, mingling with her glorified children instead of ruling from a throne. Past the Family Temple lies the Threshold of Glory, a simple door marked with Hazoret's heart symbol that opens into the Proving Grounds.[1]
Within the Family Temple, glorified initiates live alongside Hazoret and her viziers — the Guides to the Promised End — who help them find peace and resolve before their final battle. Some viziers tell the Parables of Battle, stirring tales of heroism. Others glimpse beyond the Gate to the Afterlife to inspire unwavering faith, while firebrand viziers shape the trial itself by unleashing beasts and obstacles to fuel the initiates' fervor.[1]
Very rarely, Hazoret asks for small tokens of affection — keepsakes born from joyful moments, never formal rituals. She wishes only to be loved and honored like family, and to see the glorified treat each other as cherished kin.[1]
The Trial of Zeal
The Trial of Zeal is the final test faced by initiates who aspire to earn their place in the God-Pharaoh's radiant afterlife. Only those who have conquered the first four trials, claimed four cartouches, and achieved the status of glorified are permitted to attempt this last challenge. This culmination draws on all the physical, mental, martial, and magical preparation the initiates have undergone — yet it does not simply test their mastery of skills, but their burning devotion and fervor for the promised afterlife.
The trial unfolds as a brutal gauntlet of battles called the Steps of Battle. Each duel or skirmish plays out on a separate arena platform within the Proving Grounds, where every new stage brings fresh foes and hazards. Victors cross bridges or stairs to reach the next arena, while fallen combatants are carried away by anointed mummies to funerary barges that deliver the worthy through the Gate to the Afterlife.
The opening clash is a massive free-for-all spread across the linked arenas of the Proving Grounds. A towering hourglass known as the Heart Timer, which releases sand in rhythm with Hazoret's heartbeat, marks the span of this first round. Those who remain standing when the last grain drops progress onward. As the fray surges, Hazoret herself weaves through the ranks of the glorified, driving them to ever greater heights of zeal and fury.
Once the initial battle culls the ranks by as much as two-thirds, the remaining fighters enter the next stage. Hazoret commands who faces whom, orchestrating fierce duels under harsh conditions meant to stir passion and resolve. Close companions may find themselves forced to fight one another — an honor in Hazoret's eyes, granting a glorified death by a cherished hand. Victors press forward with no rest, lest the fervor of combat cool.
When only one remains, Hazoret rewards this last glorified with the highest honor: she pierces the champion's chest and forehead with her forked staff, claiming their still-beating heart. Anointed mummies then place the fallen victor in a place of utmost reverence atop a funerary barge, which leads the passage through the Gate to the Afterlife.
At Hazoret's command, Kefnet inscribes the deeds of each Trial onto temple walls, ensuring that future generations of acolytes and initiates may draw inspiration from the glory of those who proved themselves before.[1]
