Keiga, the Tide Star (KAY-gah;[1] Japanese:
History
At some point before the Kami War, Keiga accidentally met Kiki-Jiki and entrusted him with the mission of recovering an egg that was stolen by Meloku. After this, the dragon helped the akki to unlock his inner magic talents.[2]
Kami War
During the Kami War, Keiga was killed by the o-bakemono Hidetsugu while defending the Minamo School.[3]
Neon Dynasty
After a fifty-year slumber in an egg beneath Boseiju, Keiga was reborn as Kairi, the Swirling Sky.[4][5]
Legacy
Retaining the memories of his previous reincarnation's death, Kairi serves as Hidetsugu's jailer in the spirit realm.[6] The spirit dragon briefly freed the oni to participate in the defense of Kamigawa during New Phyrexia's Invasion of the Multiverse.
On Keiga's gender
Sources on Keiga's gender are contradictory.
The Dragon's Errand refers to the ryuu (Keiga) twice with "his scales" and "his massive jaws".[2] In Heretic: Betrayers of Kamigawa, Keiga is most prominently mentioned in Chapter 22 during the battle with Hidetsugu and the yamabushi in which she/her is utilized. However, part of the confusion can be found earlier in Chapter 13 where Keiga is mentioned as Yosei's brother and in Chapter 21 where Keiga is briefly referenced as he. Keiga's reborn form, Kairi, is decidedly male.
