Project Lightning Bug Destruction of Ulamog and Kozilek The Travails

The Destruction of Ulamog and Kozilek occurred in 4559 AR on Zendikar, following the release of the Eldrazi two years earlier. Nissa Revane bound Ulamog and Kozilek in a net of the plane's leylines, and helped Chandra Nalaar to draw a vast amount of mana and ignite those leylines, killing the titans.

Description

After their release, only one of the Eldrazi titans, Ulamog, remained on the surface of Zendikar months later. Under advice from Ugin, Jace Beleren worked with Nissa Revane to imprison the titan within a network of hedrons at Sea Gate, rather than attempting to kill the titan. That effort was briefly successful but ultimately failed due to interference by Ob Nixilis, who subsequently called Kozilek to rejoin Ulamog.

The two titans proceeded from there toward Halimar Basin on Tazeem. The survivors of the Sea Gate effort regrouped under General Tazri, the kor ambusher Munda, the ruin diver Jori En, and Drana's emissary. Kiora, following a failed independent assault on Ulamog, also joined them.

As with the binding attempt, the direct attack on the Titans was led by the Gatewatch. They chose to attack despite Ugin's direction to Jace, due to their inability to attempt another imprisonment attempt and uncertainty about the titans' future movements and whether they would remain on Zendikar. With Jace's guidance, Nissa manipulated the leylines into a binding glyph to draw the extraplanar Eldrazi fully into physical space. Gideon Jura rallied the Zendikari defenders to lead the titans into the ambush, while Chandra and Kiora protected Jace and Nissa during the attempt.[1]

As the trap locked in place and the titans thrashed against the leylines, they began to erode and tear apart. Zendikar's Roil also responded to the binding, spawning waterspouts and storms, and the floating terrain began to fall under conventional gravity. With the evidence that the titans were being physically damaged, Chandra asked Jace for a chance to try attacking them personally. Gideon agreed that the leyline binding was insufficient and that the Zendikari troops would be overwhelmed, but Jace insisted on proceeding with his original plan.

However, Kiora interpreted the activity from the Roil as evidence that the binding would drain Zendikar's mana and kill the plane itself, and turned against them. She levitated all of the water from the Halimar Sea into a three-mile-wide sphere, and attempted to throw that volume at Nissa, but Jace deflected the water to wash away the encroaching Eldrazi spawn, instead.[2]

In the wake of Kiora's assault, Chandra chose to commit to her attack on the titans. Despite an ineffectual initial blast, Nissa was able to channel the mana from Zendikar's leylines to Chandra, igniting the leylines themselves. The titans were destroyed in an enormous explosion.

Aftermath

Kiora walked away from the scene of the battle, heading away from both Sea Gate and Halimar.[2] In the days after Ulamog and Kozilek fell, Sky Rock sheltered Zendikar's remaining survivors.

Ugin arrived and confronted Jace, furious that the titans had been killed despite his warning. He asserted that Jace and his allies should have made another attempt to trap the titans, but acknowledged that their course of action followed logically from Ob Nixilis's interference. Despite that, he warned of uncertain and ambiguous consequences stemming from the unprecedented deaths of Eldrazi titans, and admonished the survivors against interfering with his research into their remains.

Jace and Gideon resolved to depart Zendikar and gather intelligence about Nicol Bolas, Sorin Markov, and Nahiri, who had each been involved in the original imprisonment or release of the titans. Nissa committed to staying on Zendikar as its guardian.[3]
