Worrin Betzold was a human bishop, and the father of Dennick Betzold. After his death he became a zombie, mindlessly still preaching his sermons to the undead hordes swarming Thraben. He was a native of Gavony, Innistrad.
Description
Worrin Betzold was an older bishop from Gavony, known for his strict demeanor and unwavering dedication to theology. Arlinn Kord, a former student, remembers him as a stern instructor who was deeply committed to his clerical duties, often speaking only about theological matters and occasionally referencing his youth in Gavony. Despite his strictness, Arlinn feels a mix of respect and sorrow for him, particularly given the horrific fate that has befallen him.
History
After Arlinn Kord and her group's arrival in Thraben to search for the Moonsilver Key, they discovered Worrin Betzold among a mass of undead, still dressed in his holy vestments and disturbingly preaching to a congregation of zombies within the ruined cathedral. His transformation into an undead preacher signified the complete desecration of what was once a sacred place. Arlinn and her companions, determined to find the key, fought their way through the hordes of zombies.
Arlinn attempted to communicate with the undead Worrin, trying to extract information about the Moonsilver Key. However, Worrin's responses were confused and repetitive, mentioning only "Dennick," which indicated he was unable to provide the needed information. Recognizing that Worrin was no longer capable of helping them and out of a sense of mercy, Arlinn put him to rest.
Following this, the group learned more about Worrin's past and his connection to his son, Dennick. They headed to the Betzold family mansion, now haunted and decrepit, where they encountered Dennick's ghost. After dealing with the malevolent spirits in the mansion, they learned from Dennick that the Moonsilver Key was given to the Markov vampires for safekeeping. This revelation led them to seek out Sorin Markov, setting the stage for their next confrontation.[1]
Arlinn later remembered Worrin's advice about Innistrad's darkness and the need to nurture one's light. She saw him behind a desk, recalling his words, "Innistrad was born in darkness, and to the darkness, it longs to return. It is for that reason we must each tend to our own light." She also remembered that he had recommended her for the Archmagi. These memories reinforced her values and purpose, reminding her to protect her inner light despite Tovolar's temptations.[2]
