The Battle of Thraben was the climactic confrontation in the struggle to save the plane of Innistrad from the ravages of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul and the vengeance of the lithomancer Nahiri. Taking place in the city of Thraben, this desperate battle united vampires, angels, humans, and planeswalkers in an uneasy alliance to halt Emrakul's invasion and prevent the destruction of their world.
Description
The Battle of Thraben was a decisive confrontation on the plane of Innistrad, marking the climax of the struggle against the Eldrazi titan Emrakul and the machinations of Nahiri. The battle took place in the city of Thraben, a stronghold of the Order of Saint Traft, and involved a complex alliance of forces united against the encroaching Eldrazi threat.[1][2]
The defenders included the vampire army led by Olivia Voldaren, the Order of Saint Traft knights commanded by Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, and reinforcements from the Gatewatch planeswalkers, alongside Liliana Vess’s raised zombie legions. Together, they formed a coalition to resist the Eldrazi and the cultists loyal to Nahiri.[1]
Opposing them were the forces of Emrakul, manifesting as horrific Eldrazi monstrosities, along with Nahiri’s lithomancer cultists who sought to complete the summoning of the titan and spread devastation across Innistrad.
The battle was fierce and chaotic, with the defenders fighting to protect Thraben’s population and prevent Emrakul’s full arrival on the plane. Key moments included the involvement of the Gatewatch planeswalkers, who coordinated magical efforts, as well as Liliana’s strategic use of her undead army to hold critical positions.
The turning point came when Sigarda, the archangel untouched by madness, confronted and slew Brisela, Emrakul’s terrifying Eldrazi spawn created from the fused bodies of the angels Bruna and Gisela. This act broke the Eldrazi’s hold and weakened Emrakul’s influence.
Following Brisela’s defeat, Jace Beleren and Tamiyo succeeded in imprisoning Emrakul within the Innistrad Moon, sealing the Eldrazi titan away from the plane and ending the immediate threat.[3]
The victory at Thraben marked the end of the Eldrazi invasion and Nahiri’s campaign of vengeance. Though the city and plane had suffered great losses, the coalition’s success preserved Innistrad’s remaining inhabitants and ushered in a tentative hope for recovery. The Church of Avacyn was fractured, but angels like Sigarda continued to watch over humanity in the absence of Avacyn’s protective presence.
