Somberwald is a significant forested region in the Midland Range of Stensia on the plane of Innistrad. Known for its dense, drooping pine trees and rugged terrain, Somberwald is both a natural refuge for wildlife displaced by human and supernatural threats and a dangerous wilderness inhabited by predators such as werewolves and hostile spirits. The forest’s unique ecosystem and its role as a contested territory between nature and dark forces make it a notable location within Stensia’s landscape.
Description
Somberwald is a winding, melancholy forest of drooping pine trees located in the Geier Reach mountains within Stensia province on the plane of Innistrad. The forest covers steep hillsides and is inhabited by wolves, dire wolves, and werewolves, while hungry bats fill the skies at night. Wild druids and wayward geists also pose dangers to travelers, making it advisable to remain on established roads.
Somberwald is home to some of Innistrad’s most noble and pristine wildlife, including bears, stags, and boars, many of which have taken refuge here after being driven from Kessig by hunters, trappers, and werewolves. These creatures find relative safety within Somberwald’s dark but secluded environment, living in the shadow of the vampires that dominate Stensia.[1]
Despite its foreboding nature, Somberwald represents one of Stensia’s rare areas of natural beauty, where wild animals and nature spirits such as dryads and geists have endured the centuries. Following the death of Avacyn, the forest became a hunting ground for the Dronepack, a faction of werewolves corrupted by the flesh-warping influence of Emrakul.
