The Ulvenwald is a vast, ancient forest that covers large parts of the province of Kessig on Innistrad. Sometimes called the Misty Wood or the Impossible Wood, the Ulvenwald is known for its thick stands of aspen, birch, and maple trees, a constant low mist, and the unnatural dangers that haunt it. The forest forms a natural barrier that isolates Kessig from the other provinces, and large areas of it remain wild and largely unexplored. It is infamous for attacks by werewolves, hauntings by primal spirits, and stories of travelers who vanish without a trace.[1][2]

Description

The Ulvenwald is nearly impassable in many places due to its dense trees and tangled undergrowth. A hanging mist drifts through the forest year-round, making navigation difficult and distorting distance and direction. The forest’s trees have broad leaves in muted reds, golds, and greens that cover the damp ground in a thick carpet. At night, the Ulvenwald becomes especially dangerous. The forest turns stark and cold under Innistrad’s silver moon, with howls echoing from all directions. The only lights in the darkness are the luminous eyes of wild animals and the ghostly glow of wandering spirits.[3]

The forest has always been known for unexplained disappearances. Paths often twist and loop back on themselves, ending in dead ends or dense thickets, and travelers sometimes wander for days without finding a way out. People have emerged from the Ulvenwald far from where they entered, unable to explain how long they were gone or what happened inside. Even where farmland or small settlements push into the edge of the forest, its presence is always near, looming over fields and orchards.[3]

Werewolves are the forest’s most feared predators. The werewolves of the Vildin Howlpack in particular are known for stalking travelers deep within the Ulvenwald. Despite their relatively recent emergence in Kessig, the Vildin Howlpack seems completely at home in the forest’s mazelike terrain. They often hunt by toying with their prey, chasing them in circles through the mist and drawing out the fear before the kill. Spirits and dryads also dwell in the deeper parts of the Ulvenwald, adding to its reputation as a place best avoided by the unwary.[3]

Locations

  • Bower Passage Green mana - one of the three Breakneck Ride paths, leading from Gavony straight through the heart of the werewolf-infested Ulvenwald. This dirt road follows a twisting path through the tree branches that arch overhead like the ceiling of a cathedral. In the daytime, the sun streaming through the trees can be quite beautiful, but it's still foolish to be stingy with the whip. Dryads and nature spirits are said to haunt the passage, and werewolves can track horses by scent.[3]
  • Briarbridge Green manaBlue mana – A village set by a stream at the edge of the forest, known for its two creaking waterwheels.
  • The Celestus Colorless mana – A large mechanical device hidden deep in the woods, once used during the Harvesttide festival.[4]
