Strefan Maurer, sometimes called Strefan the Fiend, is the progenitor of the minor Maurer vampiric bloodline from Innistrad. He rules a remote region in Stensia's outland valleys.[1]
History
As a human, millennia ago, Strefan admired no one more than his father, and when his father met his end in an untimely accident, Strefan became obsessed with uncovering the secret to immortality. After his father’s death, he studied magic and forged a pact with the demon Shilgengar in return for the promise of eternal life. This obsession ultimately led him to murder his brother Sergei Maurer and drink his blood before journeying to Markov Manor to consult with Edgar Markov. Together with Edgar, Olivia Voldaren, and other humans who shared his ambition, Strefan worked with Shilgengar to create the twelve bloodlines of vampires on Innistrad through Shilgengar's Ritual.[2][1]
Frustrated with his limited power and status as a "minor" vampire lord, Strefan treats his people with incomparable cruelty. Sigarda attempted to intervene in the past, but Strefan was able to repel her forces. He attacked Heron's Light Hold and massacred Sigarda's knights, forcing her to flee.[1] Angels have not set foot nor wing in his territory ever since. Strefan fears only one thing: his ancient familial estate. Abandoned when his father died, twisted and terrible things haunt its halls.[2]
Strefan killed his rival Irska Dusken and scattered the remainder of the Dusken bloodline. Newcomers to his domain attract his attention, as the possibility of meeting a new consort is always on Strefan's mind, but Tatyana is the only woman he has ever loved.[1]
The original Maurer estate was abandoned by the family. Strefan left two twin relatives behind to guard it. This couldn't prevent it from being invaded by a shadowy creature called the Hladvora, which lured Strefan back to the house using the vampire hunter Brandt as a means, and attacked Strefan there.[3] Strefan's fate after the battle is unclear.
