The Rediscovery of Orazca was a pivotal event on the plane of Ixalan, marking the unsealing and reawakening of the ancient Golden City of Orazca, once hidden for centuries by the River Heralds and the plane's planar barrier. The event drew competing factions — the Sun Empire, the Legion of Dusk, the Brazen Coalition pirates, and interloping planeswalkers — into a fierce struggle for the city's heart and its legendary power source, the Immortal Sun.

Description

Centuries ago, Elenda of Garrano, the first vampire of the Legion of Dusk, discovered the Immortal Sun within Orazca when the city was deserted and sealed by powerful wards. To guard it until the city awoke again, Elenda placed herself in an enchanted sleep within a tomb of the bat-god Aclazotz, an event remembered in Sun Empire myth as the tale of "The Bat of the East."[1]

The modern reclamation of Orazca began when the merfolk shaman Kumena defied the other River Heralds and sought to claim the city's magic for himself. He became the first in centuries to reach its gates and ascend to the Threefold Temple. There, he used his magic to awaken Orazca and the elder dinosaurs entombed within it.[2][3] Kumena's act also roused Elenda from her enchanted slumber. She emerged to find her church transformed into a conquering order of cruel invaders, far from the humility and redemption she had hoped to teach. She first encountered the planeswalkers Angrath and Huatli, resolved to remind her people of their original purpose.[1]

Kumena's ambitions soon fell to ruin when Vona and Mavren Fein of the Legion of Dusk cast him from the Tower of Triumph to seize the Immortal Sun for themselves.[4] As these rivals clashed, Jace and Vraska had learned from the ancient sphinx Azor — Ixalan's hidden guardian and the Immortal Sun's creator — that the plane's barrier had failed to contain Nicol Bolas. Realizing Bolas' greater threat, they conspired to remove the artifact from the plane entirely, with Tezzeret stealing it through the Planar Bridge.[1]

Elenda reached the Sanctum of the Sun only to see the Immortal Sun vanish through a planar portal opened by Tezzeret at the behest of Vraska and Jace Beleren. Elenda refused to aid the Legion in recovering it, declaring their ancient burden fulfilled at last. To Vona's outrage, Elenda reminded her that immortality had always been meant for protection, not conquest.[5][6]

Its removal shattered Ixalan's planar seal, freeing planeswalkers trapped there, including Angrath, Jace, and Vraska. In the aftermath, the Legion of Dusk retreated in disgrace, following Elenda back to Torrezon to atone. The Brazen Coalition scattered once their leaders departed. The Sun Empire, led by Apatzec Intli III, reclaimed Orazca, transforming the ancient city into a thriving new capital. With the Immortal Sun gone, Orazca's rediscovery ushered in a new age for Ixalan, as the Sun Empire looked outward to reclaim lost power and settle old scores beyond its shores.[7][8]
