Karpani Zevanwat, commonly known as Kari Zev, is a human pirate from Avishkar. She is the captain of the Skyship Dragons's Smile, and follows no one's rule but her own. Working with the Renegades, but always asking for a prize.[2][1]
History
The infamous Kari Zev grew up in Ghirapur, the child of middle-class Consulate functionaries. Her mother was a gifted artisan in a Consulate workshop, and her father was a stern, yet compassionate bureaucrat. Her mother encouraged Kari to hone her skills as an artificer and sent her to train in a Consulate foundry. But Kari spent her time watching skyships arriving in Ghirapur's docks from the far corners of the world. In little time, she was expelled from her apprenticeship. Facing her parents' disapproval, Kari packed up her things and ran away from home at age thirteen, dreaming of the romantic adventure of life beyond the city.[3]
That year, she began serving belowdecks on the pirate ship Sun Chaser, where she met the monkey Ragavan, who had stowed away during a stop in the Peema forest.[4] Within two years, she was already notorious pirate, Ragavan now her pet, riding at the helm of her skyship, called Dragon's Smile, heading its fleet. Zev gained fame among the Renegades for her daring raids on Consulate ships.[3]
March of the Machine
When the prison holding former Consulate officer Baral was breached during the New Phyrexian Invasion, he seized the opportunity to escape immediately.[5] His brief moment of freedom was quickly overshadowed by the sudden appearance of numerous Phyrexian attackers surrounding him. Baral’s life was in grave danger until he was unexpectedly saved by Kari Zev, the infamous skyship pirate captain known for her daring exploits. Upon realizing Baral's identity, Kari Zev presented him with a stark ultimatum: join her crew in the fight against their enemies or be cast into the void below. Although allied by circumstance, Kari assigned her trusted First Mate, Ragavan, to keep a close watch on Baral, wary of any signs of betrayal.
Ghirapur Grand Prix
Despite being one of Avishkar's best racers, Zev didn't race in the 2nd Ghirapur Grand Prix.[6] Instead, she sponsored the Keelhaulers, who employed her and Ragavan as mercenary guides and envoys to Ghirapur.[7] Her reasons for willing to sponsor the team were only known to her and Ragavan.[8]
