Valakut is a volcanic mountain on the island of Beyeen off the coast of Ondu, on the plane of Zendikar.[1]

Description

Mount Valakut, known as the "Molten Pinnacle" or the "Crown Ruby," is the largest and most dangerous peak of the Crown of Talib—a ring of jagged volcanic mountains at the heart of Beyeen that resembles a monarch’s crown. The Kor named this range the God’s Crown, or Crown of Talib, after their earth god.[2]

The island of Beyeen itself is formed from several small volcanic landmasses joined by bridges of clinging vegetation. Many of its volcanoes remain active, but Valakut is the most volatile. Since the first emergence of the Eldrazi, Valakut has erupted almost constantly, launching a massive column of lava skyward. This lava sometimes hardens into floating islands of volcanic glass that drift in the air before colliding and shattering, sending razor-sharp shards raining down on the slopes below.[2]

The extreme conditions near Valakut allow only creatures with innate resistance to heat and fire to thrive there, such as fire elementals, dragons, and pyromancers. A combination of ancient geomancy and fierce mana flow occasionally severs the peaks of mountains in the Crown of Talib, causing entire summits to lift away from their bases and hover unpredictably above the craggy mesas. These peaks can crash down again without warning, and only the bravest—or most reckless—explorers venture beneat[2]h them to hunt for relics or tap into the raw primal mana below.
