Avatar: The Last Airbender (stylized as Magic: The Gathering® | Avatar: The Last Airbender) is an upcoming tentpole set in the Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond series released by Wizards of the Coast, based on the animated series of the same name. This release was created in collaboration with the creators of Avatar: the Last Airbender, Nickelodeon Animation Studio and its parent company Viacom (Paramount Media Networks). It will be released on November 21, 2025, following a preview season running October 28 – November 7.[1] The set will be Standard legal and will be the 108th Magic expansion.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is a large set with support for Limited play, and is accompanied by other products including a Beginner Box, a Jumpstart release,[1] and a Secret Lair superdrop.[3] It features the new waterbend, earthbend, firebending, and airbend mechanics.[4]

The main Standard-legal set uses the code TLA and features 286 regular cards. TLA cards are primarily found in booster packs.[1][5]

Normal framed cards are #1-286. Alternate card frames have a different card number than the original version.

The full-art basic lands are #287-296. These are split into the following two sets:

  • "Avatar's Journey" basic lands are #292-296.

Borderless cards are #297-363. These are split into the following subcategories:

Extended art cards are #364-393. #393 specifically is the Buy-a-Box promo.

The alternate art Bundle promo is #394.

TLE

TLE expansion symbol

Cards not legal in Standard use the set code TLE and an alternate expansion symbol. This group of cards is officially referred to as "Avatar: The Last Airbender Eternal-legal sets"[1] or the "Eternal-Legal Set";[6] Scryfall uses the name "Avatar: The Last Airbender Eternal".[7]

Themes and mechanics

The Last Airbender debuts four new named mechanics, each one corresponding to one of the "bending" styles of the franchise:[4]

  • Airbend is a keyword action that captures airbending's evasive and disruptive nature. When you airbend a permanent, it is exiled. However, its owner may pay 2 generic mana to cast it from exile as long as it is exiled this way.
  • Waterbend costs are a new type of cost that appear in activated abilities and as additional costs on spells. They are always generic mana costs. Similarly to convoke and improvise, creatures and artifacts you control can be tapped to pay for 1 generic mana in a waterbend cost.
  • Firebending is a triggered keyword ability on creatures that represents firebenders' ability to draw power from aggression. Whenever a creature with firebending X attacks, its controller adds X Red mana, which they don't lose between steps and phases until the end of combat.
  • Earthbend is a keyword action that symbolizes earthbenders' ability to take advantage of the terrain around them. When you earthbend X, target land you control becomes a 0/0 creature with haste in addition to its other types, and you put X +1/+1 counters on it. When that land dies or is exiled, you return it to the battlefield tapped.

None of the bending mechanics are tied to one specific color, although they are each more prevalent in specific colors, and they each support a variety of mechanical themes in the set rather than being a self-contained theme. This was intentional on the part of Design, who wanted to reflect the versatility of bending as portrayed in the show.[11] Cards with the different bending abilities feature a corresponding watermark.

Exhaust and Flashback are used deciduous mechanics.[12] Clue tokens are created by several cards in the set, although the investigate keyword is not used. Chris Mooney explained that this was done to reduce the number of keywords in the set, and to bring Clues more in line with the design of other predefined tokens.[13] The set also includes nonmodal double-faced cards.[1]

Card types

The Last Airbender sees the return of the Ally type to Standard, for the first time (outside of reprints) since Oath of the Gatewatch. Ally typal is a major theme of the set. It also introduces the Bison, Lemur, and Platypus creature types.

Lessons return, but mostly for flavor reasons, as there are no cards with the learn mechanic. They constitute a major mechanical theme with many payoffs.[13] Like many Universes Beyond sets before, the set features Sagas; these depict events within the show's history, and some transform into legendary creatures depicting historical characters. Shrine enchantments also return.[11] The set features one Cave land.

Kangaroo becomes eternal. Mongoose is used on a new card for the first time since Odyssey.

Limited archetypes

The Last Airbender features the following limited archetypes:[14]

Counters

The set introduces conqueror counters for Zhao, the Moon Slayer.

Notable cards

Storyline

The franchise is set in an Asian-inspired fantasy world that is divided into four nations: the Water Tribes, the Fire Nation, the Air Nomads, and the Earth Kingdom. People of each nation are capable of telekinetically manipulating (referred to as "bending" in the franchise) one of the four elements: water, earth, fire, or air.

The titular "Avatar" is the only person who can bend all four elements, and they are responsible for maintaining spiritual and physical balance in the world. After an Avatar's death, the Avatar spirit is reborn into a new person of a different nation, who must learn their bending skills anew and take on their Avatar responsibilities.

The scope of this set within the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise is limited to the original 2005 animated series.[1][16] The animated series is structured into three seasons, each referred to as a "book", and within each book are individual episodes called "chapters". The three books are titled "Water", "Earth", and "Fire", corresponding to the elements that the titular last Avatar, Aang, must master.

Reception

Near the end of the preview season, Tolarian Community College praised Avatar: The Last Airbender for its "Magic-adjacent" setting, the quality of its design, and its full size and support for traditional Booster Draft, while criticizing the source material cards as low-quality collectibles. The review compared Avatar favorably against the recent and poorly received Universes Beyond set Marvel's Spider-Man.[24]
