Commander Box League
The Commander Box League is a week-long tournament league played at WPN stores that run alongside Prerelease, introduced with Edge of Eternities (2025).[1][2] It is Limited Commander play.[3]
Description
The Commander Box League is a series of events. Participants open a Play Booster box and build a 60-card Commander deck using any cards they open. Cards from outside the Play Booster box, including Commander Play promos received for participating in the program, cannot be used in their deck. Modified rules for deckbuilding allow for flexibility and fun in a Sealed-style environment. Players may then play with their deck in pods throughout the week from Prerelease.

Offered during the Prerelease period, Commander Box League is a Sealed event in which players open a Play Booster box, build a 60-card Commander deck, and play in Commander Box League games throughout the Prerelease period. Players purchase a Play Booster box as part of the entry. Games are played with normal Commander rules, but deck building follows modified rules for the Commander Box League.
Commander Box League deck rules
After players open their Play Booster box, they construct a 60-card Commander deck from the contents. Buy-a-Box and Commander Play promos may not be used in deck building.
Decks may include multiple copies of cards opened from the Play Booster.
- Any legal commander opened is allowed.
- Color identity rules in deck building are ignored; players may build decks with any colors they want, regardless of their commander's color identity. Note: commander color identity still applies when cards refer to color identity (for example, with Arcane Signet).
- Players may adjust their decks between games using cards from their Play Booster box.
Pairing and gameplay
Pods are composed of three to four players, with pairing left to the store to decide. The entry fee is at the store's discretion, and stores are responsible for providing the Play Booster box for entry.
Normal Commander rules apply for gameplay in these events (e.g., 40 starting life, commander damage tracking, etc.).
