Lorwyn Eclipsed is an upcoming premier set, returning to the plane of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor[a] for the first time since 2008.[5][6][7] It is the 109th Magic expansion and will be released on January 23, 2026, following a preview season running January 5–9.[1][8] The Lorwyn and Shadowmoor aspects of the plane are both represented, creatively and mechanically, within the set.[5]
Background
Similar to Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, Lorwyn Eclipsed brings modern design sensibilities to a setting that under-performed on its first outing, while keeping some nostalgic elements of the original block such as goblins, kithkin, faeries, and elves.[9][10] Lorwyn and Shadowmoor now coexisting was the core premise the design started with.[11]
Many of the original artists were brought back to stay true to the art direction of the earlier sets.[5]
Set codes and numbering
Standard (ECL)

The main Standard-legal Lorwyn Eclipsed set uses the set code ECL.[7] It contains 283 regular cards (81 commons, 100 uncommons, 65 rares, 22 mythic rares, 15 basic lands), and includes randomly inserted traditional foil versions of all cards.

Themes and mechanics
Lorwyn Eclipsed calls back mechanically to both the Lorwyn and Shadowmoor blocks. About half of the draft archetypes involve a typal component as a reference to Lorwyn, while the other half use color as a mechanical thread, referencing Shadowmoor.[5] In keeping with this, the set is the first since Hour of Devastation, released nearly ten years prior, to use −1/−1 counters as the main counter type, rather than +1/+1 counters or oil counters. The set also sees the return of Changeling as typal glue for the various creature type themes in Limited.[5][13]
The set introduces the Blight ability. When a player is instructed to blight N, they put N −1/−1 counters on a creature they control. Some cards require their controller to blight as a cost, while others impose it on opponents.
Vivid is a new ability word. It appears in abilities that count the number of colors among permanents you control.[13]
Convoke appears in the set in a significant capacity.[13] Behold is another returning mechanic. Like in its debut set, Tarkir: Dragonstorm, it creates design space for typal synergies that don't require committing to the board first.
Nonmodal double-faced cards (NDFCs) with Transform are used to thematically represent the alternating between Lorwyn's charm and Shadowmoor's malevolence. NDFCs don't show up in large numbers, but are used for a few key characters. The design of the transformation offers players more control than usual by having a mana cost to transform once each turn.[13] In contrast to other sets, R&D created designs where each face is of roughly equal value.[14]
Several mechanics from Lorwyn and Shadowmoor blocks appear as cameos: Persist, Conspire and Wither.[14][13] Evoke is used on a series of Elemental Incarnations that are a callback to Lorwyn, but now with different effects depending on the color that is spent for the cost.[13] A cycle of rares references champion, although the mechanic is not keyworded.[13][14]
Card types
Lorwyn Eclipsed sees the return of the Kithkin creature type as one of the main typal synergies, matching those from the Lorwyn-Shadowmoor block. Other returning typal creature types from Lorwyn include Goblins (Boggarts), Merfolk (Merrow), Elves, and Elementals (Flamekin). Greater Elementals (also with the Elemental creature type) are found across all five colors. Many of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor's minor creature types return, including Giants, Treefolk, and Noggles. The plane's Changelings (typed as Shapeshifters) return to act as typal glue.
The set sees the reintroduction of the Sorcerer creature type since its removal during the Grand Creature Type Update in Lorwyn in 2007. It was added to replace Shaman as the default red spellcaster, but it will not replace Shaman completely as a creature type.[15][16][17] At the time of the release, nearly two dozen creatures from Magic's history that were named as sorcerers received the type, as well. None of these creatures lost any types they previously had.[18] Final Fantasy sorcerers were notably excluded from this update.
Although Design had retired the Kindred card type, they felt that a return to Lorwyn, the world where the card type began (as "Tribal"), would be the right place to re-use it strategically.[5][19] A small number of Kindred cards are included as a nod back to the original block.
Counters
Dream counters are used for the first time on a card not related to Rasputin Dreamweaver.
Limited archetypes

Lorwyn Eclipsed features the following limited archetypes. Five of them are mainly typal themed, having a multicolored signpost card, unlike the others; however, all 10 archetypes have a hybrid signpost with typal archetypes having those in the "eclipsed" cycle. Additionally, all typal themes are accompanied by a mechanical strategy, as a development from Bloomburrow.[14][20]
: Merfolk typal (Tapping your creatures matters)
: Casting on opponent's turn matters with Faeries
: Goblin typal (Sacrifice and −1/−1 counters)
: Vivid midrange
: Kithkin typal (Go-wide and playing Kithkins matters)
: Blight control
: Elemental typal (Spells with mana value 4 or greater matters)
: Elf typal (Elves in graveyards matter)
: Blight aggro
: Vivid ramp
Storyline

(L-R): Lluwen, Abigale, Sanar, Tam, Kirol.
Dare to enter the ever-changing plane of Lorwyn and Shadowmoor and discover your true self. The set is the second in the third and final story arc of the Metronome storyline. What has been happening on the plane since the Lorwyn-Shadowmoor block is a big part of the storyline. Four Strixhaven students are led astray by a mysterious faerie, and fall through an Omenpath onto the plane of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor. Their arrival disturbs the balance between the two aspects of the world, but they manage to make new friends and recruit another student. The faerie turns out to be the long-lost brother of the fae queen Maralen.

A return to Lorwyn was first teased during the 2023 Announcement Day panel at Gen Con Indiana with an expected release date in Q4, 2025.[9][21] With the introduction of Universes Beyond sets into Standard, the release date was pushed back to early 2026.[22] The First Look was given at the MagicCon: Atlanta 2025 preview panel in September; it emphasized nostalgic callbacks to the original Lorwyn and Shadowmoor blocks.[5]
To celebrate the release, Wizards of the Coast partnered with The Jim Henson Company to create a short film set in Lorwyn-Shadowmoor starring handcrafted puppets.[23]

Typal cycles
As an evolution from Lorwyn, similar to Bloomburrow, horizontal cycles overlap with the main typal cycles: Kithkin (), Merfolk (

| Shock lands | Temple Garden | Hallowed Fountain | Blood Crypt | Steam Vents | Overgrown Tomb |
| Five rare dual lands with basic land types that enter tapped unless their controller pays 2 life. Each of the land's art depicts the habitat of major typal groups in the set at the border between the bright Lorwyn aspect and the dark Shadowmoor aspect from left to right. The flavor text describes the typal group's behavior on Lorwyn, then the phrase "...when the skies darkened, then...", and finally the typical group's counterpart behavior on Shadowmoor. The Booster Fun versions of these cards are reversible to show off both their Lorwyn and Shadowmoor aspects. These reprinted lands complete the cycle from Edge of Eternities for Standard. | |||||
