The Primal Wellspring is the sacred source of the Great River on Ixalan, revered by the River Heralds as a vital font of ancient magic and life. Hidden deep in the mountain jungles east of the Inner Sea, it is a place of natural power fiercely protected by both the land and its denizens.
Description
The Primal Wellspring lies in a lush, vine-choked gorge within a mountainous region west of Queen's Bay, where it feeds a powerful waterfall that emerges from a massive stone sculpture carved into the cliffside. The water pours forth from the sculpture like a giant golem's head spewing forth a cascade. Its waters split into multiple branches: one flows directly into the Inner Sea, while another joins northern tributaries to form the winding Great River, which crosses much of Ixalan's heartland. The surrounding jungle is thick and trackless, forcing travelers to navigate treacherous terrain filled with hidden threats. Encounters near the Wellspring can be perilous, as the land itself and its hidden guardian stand vigilant against any who would defile its waters. The Wellspring's crystal-clear pool conceals a dangerous guardian — a snapping sailback dinosaur lurking beneath the cascading waters, ready to strike at any who dare disturb this sacred site.[1][2]
For the merfolk of the River Heralds, the Wellspring is more than just the river's source; it is a living embodiment of the primal magic that sustains their people and their connection to Ixalan's wilds.[2]
History
Since time immemorial, the Primal Wellspring has been a holy site for the River Heralds, who believe it was blessed by the first great shapers of Ixalan's rivers and jungles. Its sacred status has made it a place of ritual, meditation, and fierce protection against any invader, whether vampire conquistadors of the Legion of Dusk or pirates of the Brazen Coalition. Despite its remote location, adventurers sometimes seek it out for its rumored magical properties or as a vital landmark on expeditions between the Inner Sea and the highlands beyond.[2]
