Itlimoc is visible on the map of Ixalan, between Orazca and Pachatupa.

Itlimoc, also known as the Cradle of the Sun's Radiance, is a sacred forest deep in the interior of Ixalan. To the River Heralds, Itlimoc embodies the ancient harmony between merfolk and the early humans who once coexisted in this lush region. According to the River Heralds' oral traditions, they dwelled in Ixalan's interior long before the arrival of humans, though the merfolk themselves claim no knowledge of where the humans originally came from.

During a time of relative peace and mutual respect, merfolk shamans and human priests worked side by side to bless the forest of Itlimoc with abundant fertility. This ancient blessing still permeates the jungle, infusing its verdant groves with a living, radiant vitality that the River Heralds fiercely protect to this day.

Before the rise of the Sun Empire, human civilization on Ixalan was organized into scattered city-states. One such city-state, Orazca, lay west across the river from Itlimoc and gradually rose to prominence under the ambitious leadership of Chacanto Intli. Through diplomacy and cunning, Chacanto began to unite neighboring city-states under her rule. During this era, humans and dinosaurs remained clear of the River Heralds' lands, instead trading peacefully with the merfolk for goods they could not produce themselves.

Generations later, though, Chacanto's descendant, Apatzec Intli I, harnessed the power of the Immortal Sun in an attempt to conquer the merfolk's sacred territories. This aggression brought the planeswalker Azor to intervene. With Azor's guidance, the River Heralds overthrew Orazca's human rulers and reclaimed the golden city, pushing the humans eastward where they established Pachatupa along the coast, on the far side of Itlimoc from Orazca. A spell cast by Azor ensured that the golden city's location was forgotten by the humans, though they still hoped to one day reclaim it.

Through centuries of upheaval, shifting borders, and wars for power, Itlimoc has remained remarkably untouched. Its living canopy and hidden groves stand as a testament to the land's enduring magic and the River Heralds' unyielding guardianship of Ixalan's primal heart.
