The Teeth of Akoum is a treacherous mountain range in northern Akoum on the plane of Zendikar.
Description
The Teeth of Akoum is a series of jagged mountain ranges that are nearly impassable without flight or the aid of a highly skilled and resourceful guide. Inhabitants include members of Zendikar’s sentient races, occasional sphinxes, and even a golem that went rogue from its original purpose.[1]
Locations
Affa is the largest settlement in the Teeth. Located at the mountain base, it is predominantly human, though elves, kor, and even vampires occasionally reside there. A river flowing from the Teeth provides Affa with one of the few reliable sources of fresh water on the continent. Its bazaar serves as the region’s primary trading hub. Goblins, especially from the nearby Lavastep warren, frequently bring goods to trade.
Notable locations within Affa include:
- The Affa Inn — run by Hion, home to the Names of the Lost Travelers.[1]
- The Akoum Expeditionary House — a center for explorers and adventurers operating in the region.[2]
Other locations of interest in the Teeth include:
- The Eye of Ugin — a secret, ancient cavern hidden deep within the Teeth. It once served as the prison of the Eldrazi titans.[2] Since it is from the period of the titans' binding, it is around 6000 years old.[3]
- The League of Anowon Camp — a secluded training camp for elite explorers, founded by the vampire scholar Anowon. Accessible mainly by griffin from Affa, retired adventurers staff the camp and frequently shuts down due to threats such as drake attacks, mana storms, earthquakes, or unstable magical artifacts.[1][2]
- The Spikefields — a hazardous zone covered in sharp, jagged stones.[2]
- Windblast Gorge (also called Drake Ravine) — a perilous mountain pass frequented by aggressive drakes and dangerous weather phenomena.[2][4][5] The gorge was originally carved by the monstrous Eldrazi Zhulodok as it passed through the mountains.[6]
