The Spikefields is a perilous region of northern Akoum on the plane of Zendikar, known for its dazzling yet deadly crystalline terrain and ancient ruins buried beneath volcanic rock. Part of the rugged Teeth of Akoum, the Spikefields lure adventurers and refugees alike with their hidden fortresses — now repurposed as protective Stone Havens against the Eldrazi threat. Amid razor-sharp rock splinters, blistering heat by day, freezing nights, and lurking elementals, small communities of kor, humans, and Mul Daya elves shelter in these havens, blending ancient lithomancy, hedron magic, and ghostly guardians to survive in one of Zendikar’s most dangerous landscapes.
Description
The Spikefields are a crystalline landscape where razor-sharp rock shards jut from the ground in glittering formations. Akoum’s crystalline fields shimmer in a rainbow of colors beneath the harsh sun, masking a deadly reality: the smallest stone carries an edge sharp enough to slice through leather and flesh when an unwary traveler slips and falls. Even standing still can be dangerous, as mere sound can trigger the spikes to fall, creating hazards for those who pass beneath them.[1]
The surface temperatures in the Spikefields can reach punishing extremes. During the day, the sun’s glare on the gleaming crystals creates blistering heat, while the stone cools rapidly at night under a cloudless sky, plunging the region into bitter cold. Despite the danger, the spikes are navigable with the right guide, though travelers must also watch for lurking monsters like elementals that stalk the shimmering terrain.[2]
The passage of the Eldrazi through this harsh land has had unexpected consequences. As layers of volcanic rock crumble away under the Eldrazi’s touch, ancient ruins long buried beneath the Spikefields have been revealed. Within a deep chasm stretching for miles across the desiccated terrain, a string of ruined fortresses—remnants of the ancient Makindi Empire—has been unearthed. Word of these ruins has drawn many kor to Akoum, including stoneforge mystics who carry on Nahiri’s lithomantic tradition.[1]
These mystics have turned the exposed ruins into shelters known as Stone Havens, binding the crumbling walls to hedrons and channeling their protective powers to ward off the Eldrazi. Many humans have joined the Kor in these havens, seeking refuge from the Eldrazi swarms. Travelers of all races gather in these makeshift fortresses, but the kor still move along their pilgrimage routes. One notable haven, Ghostwatch, is home to a remnant of Mul Daya elves working alongside kor clerics. Together, they have invoked kor revenants and elf ghosts to guard the haven, earning the shamans and clerics the deep reverence of those who dwell within its walls.[1]
