Apepei was an advisor to Lord Peemel in the city-state of Iwset in the Dark Age of Terisiare, on the plane of Dominaria.[1]
Description
Apepei was a dwarf, short of stature but bold of heart. He had a large shock of bright red hair and a beard, and was very animated, often resorting to jumping up and down as he argued with his arch-rival Digody.[1]
History
Apepei was born in some mountains distant to Iwset, and later traveled to that city-state and started to work as advisor to Lord Peemel, in direct competition with his arch-rival Digody. Peemel had set this up purposefully, to allow two equally strong-willed but opposed advisors to counsel him, to ensure neither getting too much sway in his realm. While Apepei seemed to have the best interest of Iwset at heart, he was also the secret lover of the Lady Edara, ruler of the island realm of Jehesic, which rose to be an opposing force under the rule of Peemel. While Jehesic laid no claim to Iwset's lands, Peemel aggressively sought to expand his influence and declared war on Jehesic after Edara refused Peemel's marriage proposal.[1]
Apepei realized that neither Iwset nor Jehesic would thrive under Lord Peemel's rule, but he continued counseling peace while Digody spurred the war on. Digody made a pact with the sorceress Ferantia to woo Edara over to Peemel's side, but Edara vehemently refused. Ferantia eventually betrayed Edara, casting a spell of compulsion on her to force her to concede the war. However, Apepei was on the island and killed Ferantia with his sword before she could finish her plan.[1]
Apepei then set up the sorcerer Coernn and most of his men as spies among Vervamon's soldier band, hoping to put the Sigil of Iwset into the hands of its unknown heir Yunnie. They eventually succeeded in this when Ehno killed the traitor Feyne and put the sigil into the young man's hands. [1]
Later, Apepei was present at court when Lord Peemel revealed he had captured Edara using stealth tactics. Digody then seized the opportunity to stab Peemel in the back with his dagger in an attempted coup. Before the guards could summon the will to follow the traitor, Apepei killed Digody with his sword, ending his very brief reign over Iwset. Apepei then arranged for Iwset's heir Yunnie, son of Peemel's late wife, to marry Edara and unify Iwset and Jehesic, despite his personal feelings on the matter. This was not to be, however, as Yunnie refused the honor, smashing the Sigil of Iwset and leaving the others to sort out the pieces. Apepei and Edara then were married, much to their happiness, but leaving them with a tough claim to Iwset without either the sigil or the heir to solidify their rule, and with such characters as Ihesia and Offero scheming in the background.[1]
