Vervamon the Elder was a sage and scholar who lived during the Dark Age on Dominaria.[1]

Description

Vervamon had sinewy arms, a high forehead, and a baritone voice. He had green eyes, a thick thatch of snowy white hair, and was a head taller than Maeveen O'Donagh. He had a strong set to his firm chin and held his broad shoulders and back stiff like a treefolk. He had a peculiar charisma, drawing much attention to himself as he talked, his mere presence causing others to take note. This also made him a natural leader, with a willpower to match.[1]

History

At a point during his younger days, Vervamon encountered the lady Pioni, the estranged wife of Lord Peemel of Iwset. Pioni fell pregnant after their encounter and gave birth to a boy Yunnie. To save the infant's life from the inevitable rage of Lord Peemel, the elf Tavora, Peemel's majordomo at the time, offered to smuggle the child away from Iwset, offering him to a family in the fishing village of Shingol. Vervamon was unaware of these happenings and of the existence of a son.[1]

Vervamon worked for the Academy of Egaverral, and meticulously studied anything of interest he came across, even at the peril of his own life. He led expeditions across Terisiare, and encountered numerous dangers, including ghouls, giant leeches, carnivorous plants, and hostile bands of forest-dwelling humans. He was later burned at the stake by the intolerant Church of Tal, probably for suspicion of being a wizard, although there is no sign he possessed any type of magic.[1]

Maeveen O'Donagh was Vervamon's captain, with Quopomma and Iro serving as her lieutenants. They became embroiled in the schemes of Lord Peemel of Iwset when he claimed that the city's sigil was also the key to the Tomb of the Seven Martyrs, a discovery Vervamon shows a keen interest in being the first to claim. The sorcerer Coernn, working for Peemel's advisor Digody, sent the group towards the City of Shadows, which Vervamon was keen to explore, but after a night of terrible, prophetic dreams, they turned back towards Shingol, where Coerrn had scried that Yunnie, the inheritor of the sigil of Iwset, would be. After Maeveen rescued the young man from Merfolk Vista, the group traveled into the Urhaalan Valley, where Veramon found great interest in the Niroso, a mysterious liquid stone people who could only live underground.[1]

Vervamon then became a teacher for the Niroso, teaching them human culture, language, and history, while at the same time obtaining the secrets of the earth, including the possible location for the Tomb of the Seven Martyrs. Vervamon did not learn from Maeveen the existence of his son Yunnie, and it is unknown if he ever did so from others who knew of this.[1]

Eventually, Vervamon's quest for knowledge brought him into conflict with the Church of Tal, and he was burned at the stake under suspicion of being a sorcerer, despite having no magic abilities at all. A haughty and proud man to the last, Vervamon thought it fitting that one such as he would die in the pursuit of knowledge.[2]
