Sorin’s Restoration was an event that took place in 4559 AR in the Valley of the Spirit Dragon on Tarkir. It marked the revival of the ancient spirit dragon Ugin, who had been mortally wounded by Nicol Bolas centuries earlier. His awakening set in motion new efforts to contain the Eldrazi threat and reshaped the destinies of Sorin Markov and Sarkhan Vol.
Description
In his search to stop the Eldrazi once more, Sorin Markov returned to Tarkir to find his ancient ally, Ugin. Over a thousand years prior, Ugin had fallen in battle against Bolas and had been preserved within a protective cocoon of hedrons created by Sarkhan Vol when Sarkhan altered Tarkir’s past at the Nexus of Fate. Sorin arrived at what the local Atarka clans called the Haven of the Spirit Dragon, a deep canyon containing the hedron-wrapped remains of Ugin’s body.[1]
Unable to rely on his guide, Sorin used his own lifeblood and ancient magic to break the hedron seal. He found a shard of Ugin’s magic embedded deep within the cocoon — its keystone — and used a spell of Unmaking to collapse the structure. Ugin burst forth, alive once more, his essence restored by the magic that had preserved him.[1]
High above the canyon, Ugin confronted Sorin about the long years he had slumbered and learned of the Eldrazi’s escape on Zendikar. Realizing that only the combined power of the three original jailors — Ugin, Sorin, and the lithomancer Nahiri — could rebuild the hedron network and rebind the Eldrazi, Ugin ordered Sorin to find Nahiri and bring her to Zendikar. Sorin, reluctant but bound by necessity, agreed to locate Nahiri despite the bitter history between them.[1]
After Sorin’s departure, Sarkhan Vol entered the canyon to meet Ugin face to face. There, among visions of Tarkir’s new timeline — dragonlords reigning where khans once ruled — Sarkhan explained how he had changed Tarkir’s fate by saving Ugin in the past, using a hedron shard from the Eye of Ugin. Ugin and Sarkhan pieced together how Nicol Bolas had used Sarkhan to help release the Eldrazi, and how Sarkhan’s time-twisting actions erased the old Tarkir from existence, leaving him an “orphan of time.” Though Ugin admitted that the voice Sarkhan had heard guiding him was not truly Ugin's, he recognized that Sarkhan’s actions preserved Tarkir’s dragons and changed the plane forever.[2]
With his mind freed at last, Sarkhan took wing as a dragon, vowing to live freely in the Tarkir he had restored. Ugin departed soon after, his thoughts turning back to Zendikar and the ancient threat of the Eldrazi. This caused Tarkir's dragonstorms, no longer empowered by Ugin's essence, to finally lessen.[3]
