Timeline
Deicide in Nyx Nexus of Fate Sorin's Restoration

The Nexus of Fate was a climactic event on Tarkir where the planeswalker Sarkhan Vol altered the fate of the entire plane by traveling into the past to prevent the death of the spirit dragon Ugin. This event reshaped Tarkir’s timeline, resulting in the rebirth of dragons, the downfall of the khans, and ultimately, the dominance of the dragonlords.

Description

In 3279 AR, Nicol Bolas tracked his twin brother Ugin to Tarkir. There, the two elder dragons fought a monumental battle that left Ugin mortally wounded.[1] In the original timeline, Ugin’s death eventually led to the extinction of the plane's dragons, and left only echoes that haunted Sarkhan Vol over a thousand years later.[2] Consumed by these whispers, Sarkhan, led by his new-forged friend Narset and tracked by his old enemy Zurgo, found himself drawn to the spirit dragon's resting place, Ugin's Nexus.[3]

Guided by Ugin’s lingering spirit, Sarkhan entered the Nexus and unlocked a time rift that hurled him 1,280 years into the past. Arriving moments before Ugin’s defeat, Sarkhan intervened by encasing the wounded dragon in a hedron cocoon, preserving him in stasis to heal.[1]

This act triggered an increase in both ferocity and frequency of Tarkir’s dragonstorms, spawning progressively more dragons and eventually overthrowing the khans in the event known as the Khanfall. The dragonlords rose to rule the plane, suppressing knowledge of the ancient clans, though cultural traces remained hidden away in secret locations.[4][5]

When the timeline eventually spun through 1280 years and returned to 4559 AR, Tarkir's dragons were dominant and thriving, and the clans had transformed under draconic rule, becoming their servants and even meals.[6] Sarkhan, who was never born in this new timeline, returned through time to find suddenly standing in a Tarkir remade. Meanwhile, Sorin Markov arrived and awoke still dormant Ugin from his cocoon, seeking the spirit dragon’s counsel in the fight against the Eldrazi.[7][8]
