The Codex Etherium[1], also called *the Codex*, is a supposedly ancient and partially destroyed tome claimed by the Seekers of Carmot to contain the secrets of creating etherium. At the center of their philosophy, the Codex led the Seekers to pursue carmot, a mythical red stone believed to be the key to replenishing etherium. However, the Codex was ultimately revealed to be a fabrication, exposing the Seekers’ doctrine as a fraud and triggering the ascension of Tezzeret as a planeswalker.

Description

The Codex Etherium is stored in the Vault of the Seekers of Carmot at their academy in Vectis City. The Seekers claim that etherium is running out, threatening Esper’s way of life, and that the Codex—allegedly authored by the legendary sphinx Crucius—holds the knowledge to recreate or replenish it. According to the Seekers, the tome reveals that the red stone known as carmot is a vital component of etherium and the key to unlocking its secrets.

Though carmot is indeed part of etherium's composition, no known sample exists on Esper. The Seekers speculate that Crucius either consumed all of the carmot when he first forged etherium or that he was a planeswalker who sourced it from other shards of Alara.[1]

The truth behind the Codex was uncovered by Tezzeret, a gifted artificer and member of the Seekers. Upon gaining access to the Vault, he discovered that the Codex Etherium was entirely blank—a fabrication designed to manipulate followers. When he attempted to flee with this knowledge, the Seekers attacked him. On the brink of death, Tezzeret's planeswalker spark ignited, and he escaped Esper.[2]

Later, Tezzeret confronted Crucius’s consort, Sharuum the Hegemon, who confirmed that the Codex was a fraud and admitted she did not know where Crucius had gone. This revelation helped Tezzeret realize that Nicol Bolas had manipulated him by feeding him false promises about carmot and etherium.[3]
