Ki'pamu (key-pah-moo) is the capital city of the plane of Zhalfir and serves as its primary center of political, cultural, and military power. Renowned for its impressive architecture, strategic location, and historical significance, Ki'pamu has long been the seat of Zhalfirin rulers and a hub for trade and diplomacy across the continent. Positioned on the shores of a vast lake and connected by rivers to the Buleusi Bay and other key regions such as Kiingal, the city has played a central role in both the defense and development of the region throughout its history. Ki'pamu is also notable for its layered urban planning, which blends fortified walls, bustling markets, residential quarters, and grand palaces, reflecting centuries of expansion and modification by successive monarchs. The city’s historical and strategic importance is further highlighted by its involvement in major conflicts, including the Mirage Wars and the Phyrexian Invasion of Dominaria, marking it as a focal point in both Zhalfirin lore and multiversal events.

Description

Ki'pamu is the center of Zhalfir's government, military, and culture. The city is built at the edge of a vast lake and rivers that end in the Buleusi Bay and connect the city with Kiingal. The royal city had miles of stupendous walls and a deep-water harbor, with minarets, bazaars, labyrinthine streets, and communal wells. The palace of Zhalfir was made of marble, and was built throughout several generations, as one proud monarch after another enlarged and improved it until it settled in its final state during the Mirage Wars.[1]

Known Locations

  • Anvil Street - a street of metalworking shops and smithies[2]
  • Leather Street - an area of poor, ramshackle cottages,[1]
  • The Nobles' Quarter - full of mansions and towers, home of Ki'pamu's elite.[1]

History

Mirage Wars

During the Mirage Wars, Ki’pamu was a stronghold for Zhalfirin resistance against Kaervek and withstood attacks by Jolrael’s dragons. Here the prophet Asmira, Rashida Scalebane, Sidar Jabari and Hakim Loreweaver met to start the rescue of Mangara.

Ki'pamu League

The alliance of Jamuraan city-states under the leadership of Ki'pamu was called the Ki'pamu League. Although located on the far side of the continent, the League appears to be part of Zhalfir's sphere of influence. This alliance against the Keldon invasion included:

Phyrexia Invasion

Ki'pamu had been phased out alongside the rest of north-western Jamuraa since the planeswalker Teferi wanted to spare it from the horrors of the Phyrexian Invasion. It was forever lost from Dominaria when Jeska destroyed the time rift over the Zhalfirin Void.

After the New Phyrexian Invasion, Wrenn and Realmbreaker returned the phased-out Zhalfir to the multiverse by switching the landmass' place with that of New Phyrexia. Ki'pamu now exists as part of the plane of Zhalfir under the skies of Mirrodin.
