Zof, also known as Zof Marsh, is a sprawling, foreboding swamp on Zendikar's Guul Draz continent. Famous for its crimson bogs and toxic mangrove flowers, the marsh is home to all manner of dangerous creatures — from blood-hungry mosquitoes and shades to stalking swampcats and giant saltwater crocodiles. A small clan of Tajuru elves survives among the tangled roots and shadowed waters, while vampire assassins harvest the swamp’s potent pollen for deadly poisons. The oblivion priest Voshk draws grim inspiration from Zof’s lifeless wastes, seeing it as proof of the emptiness of existence. At its heart lies the mysterious Helix of Zof, an ancient spiral ruin that hints at secrets buried deep in the marsh’s silt. The swamp’s hazards and secrets alike have found their way onto Zendikar’s cards and stories, marking Zof as one of Guul Draz’s most sinister and storied places.[1]

Description

Zof stretches along the northwest coast of Guul Draz, forming an enormous mangrove swamp with crimson-colored water and tangled red mangrove trees. The flowers of these trees produce a potent, intoxicating pollen, distilled into perfumes and potions, or concentrated into a lethal poison prized by vampire assassins.[1]

This grim marsh teems with danger: giant blood-sucking mosquitoes cloud the air, hungry shades drift among the shadows, and stalking swampcats hunt beneath the mangroves. Enormous saltwater crocodiles patrol the deeper bogs, threatening any careless intruder. A small clan of Tajuru-nation elves ekes out a hidden life here, using their knowledge of the marsh’s secrets to survive among its predators.[1]

The oblivion priest \[\[Voshk]] sees Zof as proof that existence itself is bleak and meaningless, drawing inspiration for his nihilistic teachings from its lifeless waters and relentless parasites.[2]

Deep within the swamp lies the ancient ruin known as the Helix of Zof, a spiraling structure rising from the silt and mangrove roots. Its true origins are unknown, but the Helix draws the curious — and the foolish — into the bog’s heart, where few emerge unscathed.[1] This is a post-Eldrazi ruin, meaning it is less than 6000 years old.[3]
