The Conflux was a natural event that brought the separated Shards of Alara back together into a single plane.
History
Few people were aware that the event was impending and managed to prepare themselves for it. The dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas, hoping to use the mana the Conflux would generate to restore his power, gathered agents across the shards.[2] Bolas's agents revealed the plane's obelisks one by one through sabotage and deception: Gwafa Hazid unearthed the Obelisk of Bant beneath Giltspire Castle; Rakka Mar used a dragon attack as a distraction to reveal the Obelisk of Jund in a pillar in Malactoth's cave, the conflict between Marisi's Wild Nacatl and Zaliki's Cloud Nacatl uncovered the Obelisk of Naya beneath Qasal, and on Esper, the obelisk was exposed after the Seekers of Carmot manipulated a leviathan into destroying the coral concealing it. As the final wards failed, the shards began to merge.
The merging created a massive vortex of unstable energy called the Maelstrom at the nexus of the converging shards. It also reawakened the slumbering hydra-god Progenitus and catalyzed a surge of powerful five-colored beings. The resulting chaos ignited open war between the shards—later known as the Conflux War—as longstanding cultural and magical differences erupted into full conflict.
Nicol Bolas sought to harness the Maelstrom's energy to restore his lost godlike power. As he began absorbing its mana, the leonin planeswalker Ajani Goldmane intervened. Drawing upon the remaining energy of the Maelstrom, Ajani conjured a spiritual echo of Bolas himself - an avatar of the dragon-god's power. This magical duplicate attacked Bolas and forced the elder dragon to retreat from Alara.
With Bolas exiled and the Maelstrom expended, Alara remained a single unified plane. In the aftermath, the inhabitants began to explore and connect across former shard boundaries, forging a new, integrated world.[2]
