The Curse of the Chain Veil was a pivotal confrontation and turning point in 4556 AR involving Liliana Vess, Garruk Wildspeaker, and the demon Kothophed. It marked the acquisition of the Chain Veil by Liliana, the beginning of her being haunted by the artifact's Onakke spirits, the cursing of Garruk, and the death of Kothophed.
Description
At the command of Kothophed, to whom she was bound in service, Liliana traveled to the Onakke Catacombs on Shandalar to retrieve the Chain Veil, a relic of the ancient ogre civilization.[1] On her way to the catacombs she slew a native beast, unknowingly drawing the wrath of Garruk Wildspeaker, who had been hunting the creature known as the Ursoth.[2] Garruk tracked her into the temple and attacked, overpowering her until she resorted to using the Chain Veil. Empowered by the Veil's black magic, Liliana drove Garruk back, cursing him in the process. The curse twisted his body and summoning magic, corrupting beasts he called and blighting his touch.[3] Garruk vowed to hunt Liliana across the planes in search of a cure.[4]
Liliana, reveling in the power of the Veil, soon realized she could turn it against the demon who had sent her to claim it. She assaulted a fortress on another plane to test her powers, then, finding them satisfactory, planeswalked to confront Kothophed directly.[5] A battle followed in which she unleashed the Veil's power to destroy him utterly, ignoring his warning that she did not understand the burden she had taken on.[6] His death freed her from his bond and began her campaign to eliminate her remaining demonic creditors.
To Liliana's annoyance, the Veil's Onakke spirits had begun to haunt her, urging her to use the artifact ever more. The artifact had bound itself to her, resisting all attempts to be discarded.[7] It was later revealed that the Veil preserved part of the essence of Lim-Dûl, intertwining Liliana's fate with forces older and darker than she knew.[8]
