Pelakka, or the Pelakka Karst, is a treacherous region of limestone gullies, sinkholes, rises, and caves on the continent of Guul Draz on Zendikar.[1]

Description

The Pelakka Karst surrounds the Hagra Swamp with a labyrinth of narrow canyons, fast-flowing rivers, hidden caves, and shifting sinkholes. Its winding channels and plunging caverns were once part of an ancient filtration system that fed the waters of the Hagra Cistern, though now they are a perilous tangle of limestone that shifts and collapses without warning.[2]

Swift rivers churn through narrow gorges and tunnels, concealing some of the largest and most aggressive river predators on Zendikar. Many caves within the Karst are not merely hollow rock, but monstrous maws that grind shut on unwary travelers. A wrong turn can lead to being crushed by moving walls, swallowed whole by enormous wurms, or swept into hidden whirlpools when a sinkhole suddenly drains a riverbed.[2]

Despite its dangers, the Karst is not empty. Bands of vampires, desperate humans, and other refugees set up hidden camps among the shifting caves, preferring the unpredictable wrath of the Karst’s natural predators to the ever-present threat of the Eldrazi. Merfolk and other travelers avoid the region whenever possible, for even the most experienced guides can vanish into its depths, never to emerge.[2]

History

Pelakka was once part of the ancient Makindi Empire before its downfall.[3]
