Nimana, formally (and sarcastically) known as the Free City of Nimana, is a major coastal settlement on the continent of Guul Draz on Zendikar. Despite its name, the “Free City” is notorious as the principal slave port of Guul Draz, where humans and vampires alike trade in flesh and shadow.[1]

Description

Nimana is the largest port on Guul Draz, serving as the region’s main hub for trade, both legitimate and illicit. Vast numbers of slaves are bought and sold on its docks to supply the labor demands of the vampire houses and other ruthless industries across the swampy continent. For vampires, these captives also serve as fresh sustenance and cruel entertainment. [2]

Besides its dark markets, Nimana handles most of Guul Draz’s mercantile exports, shipping goods and rare swamp harvests to distant lands. Almost every vampire who sets out to infiltrate the wider world of Zendikar passes through Nimana’s harbors.[2]

Government

The city is ruled by a secretive seven-member council known as the Septumvirate, which represents the dominant factions of Nimana. Each member holds a distinctive title:[2]

  • The Keeper of Keys oversees the slave trade.
  • The Prismatic Seer speaks for the Chromatic Council, an influential order of mages.
  • The Carrier of Coins represents the city’s merchant houses.
  • The Scaled One leads the reptile trappers.
  • The Forger of Chains speaks for the city’s blacksmiths.
  • The Dock Keeper commands the wharf laborers.
  • The Sentinel commands the city guard.

History

Before the rise of the Eldrazi, the Septumvirate was steadily extending its influence into Malakir and other vampire territories of Guul Draz through the so-called “Dark Trades.” A covert alliance with House Ghet provided them sanctuary and leverage within Malakir’s vampiric strongholds. In return, House Ghet sought to weave its influence into Nimana’s politics — converting key figures to their cause and, in some cases, to vampirism itself. Their goal was to absorb Nimana into their holdings, strengthening their power and prestige.[2]

However, these secret ambitions collapsed with the awakening of Ulamog and the corruption of Kalitas and House Ghet. The Eldrazi’s return shattered the Septumvirate’s hidden schemes, plunging Nimana into chaos as the slave trade faltered and its power players turned on each other.[2]

The Chromatic Council

The Chromatic Council is a pretentious but influential order of mages in Nimana, dedicated to studying the pure colors of mana. Though it maintains a modest reputation as a school for aspiring spellcasters, its real power lies in funding expeditions into the ruins of Guul Draz to uncover lost magical lore and relics. [2]

Before the Release of the Eldrazi, rumors suggested that the council possessed secret prophecies of a looming apocalypse — knowledge that proved of little use once the Eldrazi emerged to devastate Zendikar.[2]
