The Date of Tribute was a recurring, annual event in ancient Corondor on the plane of Dominaria. Occurring once each year, it required specific offerings to be made to Sol'Kanar the Swamp King under threat of destruction. The event persisted for an unspecified total number of years and was regarded as both a political burden and a source of long-standing hostility between the affected kingdoms.[1]
History
The origins of the Date of Tribute lay centuries after the conclusion of Sivitri's War, during a turbulent period following the Blackblade–Dihada War and the subsequent abandonment of Sol'Kanar the Swamp King by Geyadrone Dihada. In the aftermath of these conflicts, Sol'Kanar took control of a vital route in southeastern Corondor — the caravan path linking the Kingdom of Khone and the Kingdom of Shikar. By deliberately submerging this critical trade artery beneath the waters of his swamp, Sol'Kanar placed both realms in a vulnerable position and used this leverage to impose his demands.
From that point onward, the two kingdoms were compelled to send regular offerings directly to him. Initially, these tributes consisted of a wide range of resources: food supplies, enslaved individuals, valuable goods, and even knowledge, all of which were to be delivered on a fixed date each year. Failure to provide these offerings carried an explicit threat—Sol'Kanar would retaliate by destroying the kingdoms. The shared resentment this arrangement fostered caused Khone and Shikar, formerly of good relations to each other, to be collectively to as the Contrary Kingdoms.[2]
Over time, the terms of the tribute were altered. Instead of providing material wealth and captives, the kingdoms were required to send a single spellcaster from each realm. Sol'Kanar intended to use their magical abilities to summon the last known Scarzam Dragon. The culmination of this practice occurred when the appointed tribute spellcasters — Gydolien Mor of Khone and Chondaeh of Shikar — were sent into Sol'Kanar's service. Their involvement directly precipitated the outbreak of the Dragon War, a major conflict linked to Sol'Kanar's designs.
