Formerly part of The Oxidda Chain and the Mephidross

The Blackcleave is a scorched and corroded region of Mirrodin, where the volcanic currents of the Autonomous Furnace bleed into the necrogen-choked mire of the Dross Pits. Blighted by fire and rot, the Blackcleave is a place where ambition and industry have collapsed into decay.

Description

The Blackcleave is marked by jagged cliffs and valleys where molten slag meets pools of oily necrogen. Once part of the Oxidda Chain, its mountainous structures are now brittle and pitted, riddled with rust and the rot of black mana. Entire ridges have become sponge-like with corrosion, and the land is slick with Phyrexian ichor. The air burns with acrid fumes, and bones litter the crumbling foothills. Former Vulshok outposts lie abandoned or repurposed by Phyrexian forces.[1]

The region was once inhabited by goblin nim, whose bites caused festering wounds.[2] One notable landmark, the Drossforge Bridge, was described as “the path to ruin, forged in pain.”[3]

History

Originally a border zone between the industrious Vulshok territory and the twisted Mephidross, the Blackcleave became a key site of corruption during the Phyrexian invasion. Scavengers and rogue artificers once scoured its ruins for salvage, but rising contamination and Phyrexian patrols soon drove most away. It grew into a haven for red and black-aligned Phyrexian abominations, symbols of its hybrid legacy of fire and decay.[1]

After Mirrodin became New Phyrexia, the Blackcleave shifted into a new spatial configuration, existing as a transition zone between the third sphere's Autonomous Furnace and the sixth sphere’s Dross Pits.[4]
