Sash and Waistcoat were two of Ixidor's six unmen created by Ixidor in Otaria on Dominaria.
Description
Sash and Waistcoat were unmen - humanoids created by Ixidor. Though their general shape was that of a human, they had few individual characteristics; their bodies were made of a shimmering silver-gray mass without any hair or facial features. However, they did have certain features of body shape - one of them was tall and gaunt, which earned him the nickname Mr. Stick while the other was short and stout, which earned him the nickname Mr. Puddle. Although they were created without the ability to speak, they were able to talk after the death of their creator. They were known as troublemakers.[1]
The tall and slender Mr. Stick later became Lord Sash, who looked outlandish in black-buckled boots, red trousers, a gray tunic, and his signature yellow sash from shoulder to hip. He also wore a carnival mask in white ceramic beneath a wide-brimmed hat hung with a head-curtain. The clothes were the right length for him but draped limply on his frame, which was, after all, flat. Duke Waistcoat, the former Mr. Puddle, looked no better in riding boots, green knickers, a dark blue waistcoat, and a cap to which a dog-faced mask had been attached. It was the only other mask they had been able to find, and now he was stuck with it.[1]
When Akroma gave Sash and Waistcoat their bodies from putty people, they looked like two Ixidors, yet Sash was tall and lean, with a high brow and a sarcastic turn of the lip, and Waistcoat was short and stout, with a low brow and a ready smile. Unlike their master, though, these reflections each had two arms.[1]
History
The unmen were a creation of Ixidor derived from his shadow that served as living escape portals designed to seal themselves when both their creator and his remaining unmen had passed through, closing the escape route. Upon this usage, the unman would cease to exist. Ixidor created six unmen, and while evading death, used four of the portals. An issue persisted during the fourth escape attempt in that two of the unmen decided they would very much like to not die and abandoned their creator, causing the final unman, later named Umbra by Akroma, to not close and allow Ixidor's pursuer to capture him. Umbra was then sent out by Akroma to fetch the two rogue unmen for their disloyalty. Umbra tracked the two down in the city of Eroshia and witnessed them gathering clothes about themselves to pass as normal humans.[1]
For a while, the three gained bodies of cockroaches, a gift from the Cabal Patriarch in exchange for a promise to kill Akroma and Phage. When the un-men returned unsuccessful, the First stripped them of their cockroach bodies, leaving them as living holes once again. Then they eventually gained new human bodies, at the cost of Umbra's life, but sustained wounds from walking naked across the blistering sands of the desert. They were found and healed by Karona, who ended up befriending them because they were not affected by her aura and didn't worship her. Karona eventually decided that they could help her discover her true identity, so she took them as her disciples.
When Sash concluded that Karona was magic manifest, she instantly took on the idea and started to test her newfound powers. Through much trial and error, they discovered that her powers were based on faith. After the goddess's power began to rise out of control and she started Karona's War, she attacked the Numena and killed many people. In the end, Kamahl came to bring an end to Karona's reign, but he almost lost the fight. Acting under advice from Lord Macht, Sash and Waistcoast then betrayed Karona, and pierced her belly with the Mirari Sword. They were thus two of few survivors of the war, returning to the Gilded Mage tavern to have a drink of beer.[2]
