The Lazotep Mines lie at the outskirts of Naktamun.

The Lazotep Mines were the lifeblood of Amonkhet's hidden necromantic machinery. Beneath the scorching sands outside Naktamun, anointed mummies labored endlessly to unearth the shimmering blue mineral that would shape the destiny of the plane. Though revered by the people for its use in sacred cartouches and tombs, lazotep's true purpose lay buried in secrecy, fueling the creation of the Eternals who waited in the darkness for the God-Pharaoh's return.

Description

The Lazotep Mines were the hidden source of the rare and magical metallic-blue mineral known as lazotep, an essential material within the culture and dark secrets of Amonkhet. Scattered across the arid outskirts of Naktamun, these mines were worked tirelessly by anointed mummies who labored in silence to extract the precious substance beneath the blistering desert sun. While the citizens of Naktamun saw lazotep as a sacred resource, used to craft their intricate cartouches and to seal tombs so that restless dead could neither intrude nor escape, few truly understood the extent of its secret purpose.

Lazotep possessed remarkable magical and physical properties that made it invaluable to the God-Pharaoh's grand design. It was strong yet light, resilient enough to resist decay, scavengers, and the harsh desert elements, and its magical essence bonded seamlessly with the embalming rites performed in the Crypt of the Eternals. As a result, lazotep was the perfect material for encasing the corpses of the worthy dead, transforming them into the indomitable Eternals — an immortal legion clad in lustrous blue armor that could endure the ages without succumbing to rot.

While the citizens believed all mined lazotep went toward the ornamentation of cartouches and tombs, vast quantities of the mineral were quietly hidden in concealed compartments aboard funerary barges carrying the corpses of initiates who had completed the God Trials. Once these barges passed through the sealed Gate to the Afterlife, the secret stores of lazotep were delivered to the necropolis where they were used to coat the bodies of the chosen dead, forging an army in waiting for the prophesied return of Nicol Bolas. Thus, the Lazotep Mines stood at the root of Amonkhet's greatest hidden truth — that the very substance revered by its people ensured that death was never the end, but merely the beginning of an eternal service to the God-Pharaoh.[1]
