The Gate to the Afterlife was a massive river gate situated on the banks of the Luxa, near the outer edge of the city of Naktamun on the desert plane of Amonkhet. This grand structure stood at the point where the Hekma crossed the river, and served as a sacred passage through which the bodies of the worthy — those who had proven themselves in life — were sent onward to the paradise promised by the God-Pharaoh.[1]
History
According to the teachings of the five gods, the Gate to the Afterlife marked the final threshold separating the mortal world from the glorious afterlife prepared by the God-Pharaoh. Those who completed the Five Trials and earned the highest honor were ritually slain at the hands of the goddess Hazoret herself, and laid to rest on funerary barges that drifted down the Luxa. These chosen dead would pass through the Gate to the Afterlife and wait in a lush hidden oasis, where they would rest in eternal reward until the God-Pharaoh's return, when they would be reborn as immortal Eternals to stand beside him in endless glory. The worthy dead's cartouches stay with their body as they pass through the Gate to the Afterlife. It is said that when the God-Pharaoh welcomes the dead to his afterlife as Eternals, they will awaken, and, infused with the magic of their cartouches, once again return to life as the best versions of themselves.[1]
During the Final Hours, the Gate to the Afterlife was foretold to open completely in an event known as the Hour of Revelation. As the Second Sun aligned perfectly between the monumental horns that crowned the God-Pharaoh's monument, the gate would swing wide, unveiling the radiant truth of his divine plan. This moment would mark the beginning of the end for the world as it was known and the fulfillment of the faithful's long-awaited transformation into eternal life.[1]
However, when the Final Hours did come, and the Gate to the Afterlife swung open by itself, it revealed not a waiting paradise, but the massive Crypt of the Eternals, where the silent ranks of the Eternals emerged to bring death and ruin instead of eternal rest.[1]
