Felothar Zanhar is a human warrior from Tarkir. She is the head of House Zanhar, the current khan of the Abzan Houses, and bound to the spirit dragon Betor.

Description

Felothar is a transgender woman.[1] She had been a soldier before she was a khan, and she still dresses in a martial manner.[2] Rumor had it that there'd been a bit of a scandal when Felothar refused to accept the ceremonial armor that had been crafted for her, preferring the ones she'd been given before her promotion to this new role.

Because she is a soldier at heart, Felothar often spends ages deliberating on matters with the help of the Council of Houses; each of the house representatives' opinions is given equal weight and consideration. It makes her beloved among her people, but it also makes it so that every decision is mired in hours of intense discussion.[3] She is known for only making promises she can keep, though her honesty can at times backfire as she will not hold her tongue or her sword when wronged.[1]

History

Felothar served as a soldier in the ranks of Dromoka's clan.[2][1] One day, she was separated from her unit when a sinkhole opened in the Shifting Wastes.[4] She came across a sunken Kin-Tree and communed with the spirit of Anafenza. After escaping the sinkhole, she returned on occasion to listen to the ancient spirits and their tales of a time before the dragonlords, sharing these stories with those she trusted among her ranks. During the New Phyrexian Invasion, Felothar called on the spirits in a moment of desperation to save her allies, but Dromoka considered communal with the spirits as forbidden necromancy, so Felothar was branded a traitor.

She fled to the caverns beneath the Wastes and joined a growing rebellion under the Abzan name, eventually rising to leadership in the rebellion.[1] During the Stormnexus Ritual, Felothar called the spirit dragon Betor into being, shaping their essence with her own beliefs.[5] After Dromoka was overthrown, Felothar reinstituted the Abzan's House Zanhar and was chosen as the new khan of the Abzan by the Council of Houses for her leadership in the rebellion and her ancestral ties to Reyhan, the last Abzan khan before the Khanfall.[4]

When the Jeskai Waymaster Narset and the planeswalker Elspeth Tirel were besieged by Sarkhan Vol's wild dragons, Felothar and the Abzan came to the rescue.[6]
