Drana is the last surviving bloodchief of the Kalastria, the wealthiest and most powerful of the vampire families of Malakir on Zendikar.

History

When Kalitas of the Ghet family seized holdings outside of Malakir and threatened to turn all of the vampire populace into thralls of the Eldrazi, Drana struck back. She drove Kalitas and his traitors away from the city, retaking control of Malakir. However, Drana's victory was short-lived, as she and her remaining people had to evacuate the city before the ever-growing hordes of Eldrazi fell upon it.[1] When Bala Ged was near-total destruction, she decided to join forces with the troops of Gideon Jura on Tazeem.

After the rise of Kozilek, when the Planeswalkers dedicated to stopping the Eldrazi were either defeated or went missing, Drana begrudgingly allowed general Tazri to take command.[2] She survived the last confrontation with Ulamog and Kozilek, in which the titans were defeated by the Gatewatch and their allies.[3]

As the only survivor of the bloodchiefs, the first generation of vampires, Drana holds unquestioned leadership over vampire society as it rebuilds from the devastation of the war against the Eldrazi. In a desperate effort to repopulate vampire society, Drana is trying to discover the means to create new bloodchiefs, since only a bloodchief can create a new vampire.[4] Her desire to rebuild her shattered race makes Guul Draz particularly dangerous for non-vampire visitors.[5]

Phyrexian Invasion

More by accident than anything else, the vampire bloodchief Drana and the angel Linvala found themselves fighting in the same skies during the thick of Zendikar's invasion. A chance encounter during the battle led to a startling discovery: bloodchief magic and angelic powers complemented each other surprisingly well, and together the two of them could do more damage than they had apart. As they've fought, their mutual disdain and dislike for each other has transformed into one of respect and appreciation for the other's power and skills.[6]
