This is a timeline of Magic: The Gathering sets and storyline sources. It is an unofficial document, but all information on it is taken from official statements or canon sources. All stories that could be dated, or could not be dated but could be placed at some point in the timeline because of their connection to other stories, have been incorporated to the fullest possible extent. Note that this timeline is not perfectly accurate, and some events have an estimated date or a date range in which they could have occurred.

  1. Bolas's ascension takes place by c. -15,500, and these stories take place 4,000-5,000 years before it, so they must end by 19,000.
  2. The Elder Dragon War begins in this story but ends by c. -17,000, so this story must end before then

  4. This story features the creation of Brass Men, who appear in "The Brass Man who would Sink", so it must take place before that story.

  9. This story takes place "millennia" after the fall of the Thran Empire, and "centuries" before the Brothers' War. It is placed less than two millenia but at least two centuries before the War.
  10. This story takes place at least 80 years after Dakkon Blackblade, as only five Elder Dragons remain and Palladia-Mors has been buried for 80 years.
  11. Though most sources place this set and the corresponding comic before the Brothers' War, there is significant disagreement between sources. Wayfarer places it before Urza–Mishra War, it places itself before Homelands, the Pocket Players' Guide places it in the "present," following the end of the Ice Age, Urza–Mishra War places it between Dakkon Blackblade and Antiquities War, and BattleMage places it "not long after" Antiquities.
  12. The Epilogue explicitly states the year as 64 AR, but this appears to have been immediately retconned by the follow-up novel, Planeswalker, which places the same events five years later.
  13. Ratepe places the present day part of this story in 3437 AR, but The Shattered Alliance retconned this date to c. 3254.
  14. This story takes place ten years after the Sylex Blast.
  15. This story takes place during Lord Ith's 12-year-long imprisonment.
  16. In The Eternal Ice, Jodah's birth year is given as 413. His age in this novel is 16-17.
  17. This comic placed itself 4000 years before The Gathering. This date has been retconned. The last comic places itself 500 years after the first.
  18. This story takes place "thousands of years" before Dreams of the Damned.
  19. This story takes place 400 years after the founding of Kjeldor, which happened 500 years before the end of the Ice Age
  20. This story takes place during Lim-Dûl's rise to power. This time period is unclear, but took place during the life of Márton Stromgald, who died "decades" before The Eternal Ice.
  21. Leshrac places this story one to five years before the Summit of the Null Moon.
  22. This story takes place during the Ice Age, a month after Belenda Danisdotter had become a skyknight.
  23. This trailer states that it takes place "2,000 years after the end of the Brothers' War," but depicts the battle between Lim-Dûl and Gustha Ebbasdotter at the conclusion of the Ice Age..
  24. This part of the novel takes place during the final battle against Lim-Dûl at the conclusion of the Ice Age.
  25. This story places itself 100 years after the The Thaw, but also features Varchild, who is said to have died five years before The Shattered Alliance.
  26. This story occurs during The Thaw and before the destruction of the School of the Unseen.
  27. This section takes place twelve years after the main story.
  28. This novel's main story takes place 20 years after its prologue.
  29. This story takes place 20 years after the World Spell.
  30. This story takes place "centuries" after the Sages meet at Minorad, shortly before Embereck's death.
  31. This novel takes place 3000 years after a Cockatrice was summoned by Urza during the Brothers' War
  32. This story features Ravi as a young woman, before she had joined the Tolgath.
  33. This part of the comic takes place 600 years before Serra travels to Sursi.
  34. The ringing of the Apocalypse Chime on Ulgrotha weakens the veil between the spirit and mortal realms on Kamigawa, directly leading to the Kami War. According to Magic: The Gathering - The Visual Guide, the war ended in 3227 AR.
  35. Toshiro Umezawa features in this story, at a point in between his story in Outlaw and Heretic.
  36. This story occurs after the fall of Eiganjo Castle, and therefore must come after Heretic.
  37. This vignette occurs six years following The Dragon Shield.
  38. This story takes place decades after the conclusion of the Kami War, with its flashback portions occurring in the latter section of the war, after Guardian: Saviors of Kamigawa's conclusion.
  39. This part of the novel takes place 300 years after its main story
  40. This portion of the story takes place 1300 years before the rest of Ixalan block.
  41. This story takes place three years before Alesha became khan, which she is during the main portion of the story.
  42. This set takes place 1280 years before the other sets in the block.
  43. This story takes place months before Khanfall.
  44. This story and Khanfall take place "several years" after the Reforged Chain.
  45. This story takes place before the disaster at Tolaria in 3307, but while Teferi is a student. Teferi is 14 during Time Streams, and began attending the Tolarian Academy at age 9, according to Time Spiral, meaning he enrolled in 3301.
  46. This story begins immediately following the ending of Time Streams.
  47. This chapter takes place six months following the ending of Time Streams.
  48. This story takes place after the collapse of Serra's Realm, and tells the story of how the Metathran received their tattoos, which they have by the time of Bloodlines.
  49. This story takes place "a thousand years" before A Gaze Blank and Pitiless, "six millennia" after Sorin's Origins, and must occur before the flashback portion of Promises Old and New.
  50. These stories take place "over a thousand years" before Battle for Zendikar and Shadows over Innistrad, but after the events of Fate Reforged. It is "around a thousand years" before Rise of the Eldrazi and "five thousand years" after The Lithomancer.
  51. This portion of the story takes place during Nahiri's thousand years spent in the Helvault.
  52. In this novel, a character has a vision of Cridhe in a thousand years. This vision is depicted on the March of the Machine Commander Plane card Inys Haen.
  53. Traft is at least 40 by the time of this story, and Avacyn was created in c. 3557. He died "generations" before Innistrad block.
  54. The Art of Magic: The Gathering - Dominaria states that Terena, who appears as a princess in this story, ruled the Llanowar elfhame of Ruadach for over six centuries before she died in the Phyrexian Invasion of Dominaria.
  55. The Art of Magic: The Gathering - War of the Spark states that Bolas returned to Dominaria around the time of Fate Reforged, and ruled the Empire of Madara for four centuries following.
  56. This story takes place after Teferi establishes the Creeds of Zhalfir, but before the Phyrexian Invasion of Dominaria. In the 50 years before Teferi's return, the continent fell into conflict.
  57. This story takes place seven years following "Angel of Vengeance"
  58. This story dates itself conflictingly as "Post Invasion," "within a generation" of the Invasion, and at least 300 years before the Onslaught Cycle. Author Scott McGough later dated the story to c. 4050, and the Dominaria Art Book finally placed it at c. 4000.
  59. The novel's main story features Garth's upheaval of Estark. Its epilogue takes place three years later, and Whispering Woods occurs five years later.
  60. Noreen is pregnant in the epilogue of this novel, and her child is two years old in Shattered Chains.
  61. Greensleeves ages from 16 to 17 between the beginning of Whispering Woods and the beginning of Shattered Chains.
  62. Greensleeves and Kwam have been lovers for three years at the time of Final Sacrifice.
  63. The set's story begins with Teferi's island phasing out "almost two centuries" before the Mirage War, and ends in its first year.
  64. This story places itself about 4000 years following the events of Fallen Empires
  65. These stories take place many years after the fall of Oneah in c. 4165, but before the Phyrexian Invasion of Dominaria begins.
  66. This chapter takes place at the time of Gerrard Capashen's birth.
  67. The prologue of this comic takes place in 1265 Minorad Reckoning, and the comic concludes in 1280 Minorad Reckoning, which coincides with the beginning of the Planeswalker War in 4195.
  68. Crovax is 12 years old in this story.
  69. This novel takes place 20 years after the fall of Oneah in c. 4165.
  70. Sisay is estimated to be eleven in this story.
  71. The main story of this comic takes place in 1272 Minorad Reckoning, and the comic concludes in 1280 Minorad Reckoning, which coincides with the beginning of the Planeswalker War in 4195.
  72. This story occurs shortly before the Mirage War, as Tahngarth appears as the newest member of the Skyship Weatherlight's crew.
  73. These comics take place at the beginning of the Planeswalker War in 4195.
  74. This story takes place between Shadow Mage issues 3 and 4.
  75. This comic takes place at the beginning of the Planeswalker War in 4195.
  76. This story takes place 15 years after its first part.
  77. These comics take place a few months after The Shadow Mage.
  78. Depending on the source, Visions takes place "over a year" or "almost a year" into the Mirage War.

  81. This story happens shortly before the invasion, and the date of "c4200" was posted unofficially by the author, Scott McGough.
  82. This story covers the fight that includes Rofellos's death. The Art of Magic: The Gathering - The Rath Cycle places Mirri rejoining the crew in 4204 after spending three years in Llanowar following Rofellos's death.
  83. This story happens shortly before the invasion, and the precise date of 4203 was posted unofficially by the author, Scott McGough.
  84. At the time of this story, Phyrexians are massing on Rath and the overlay happens soon after.
  85. This story occurs early in the Invasion, featuring the destruction of New Argive.
  86. Liliana was over 200 years old by 4557, sparked when she was young, and signed her pact with the four demons "decades" later, after the Great Mending in 4500, but before she is next seen in 4556.
  87. Pianna appears in this story as a young girl.
  88. This in-world guide occurs in 1053. As it takes place during the Age of Enlightenment, it is likely Kamigawan years are counted from the end of the Kami War.
  89. Obuun, this story's subject, lived "centuries" before Zendikar Rising, though he was also present at the toppling of a skyclave in the century before the Eldrazi were imprisoned.
  90. In Planar Chaos, Karn states that it has been "over a century" since a crisis on Mirrodin. The precise dating of these sets remains debated. The novels and cards themselves repeatedly mention millenia of time passing. In some cases, this has been stated to be an error when centuries were meant, in others, it has been explained away as time dilation caused by Memnarch, and still others have yet to receive an explanation. Magic: The Gathering - The Visual Guide gives the date as 4400.
  91. The Tuktuk clan was created "around fifty years" before Zendikar block.
  92. This story takes place in the few years before Teferi and Subira's relationship and up to a few years after the birth of their daughter, who is fifty in Dominaria.
  93. This story takes place around the time of the Great Aurora, but focuses on Jace Beleren, who was born 13 years later.
  94. Homesick, from Kaladesh, places Nissa Revane's origin, during which the Great Aurora occurs, "two score" years before the set.
  95. The Gathering Storm, Chapter Six states that the Duskend Purges took place "about twenty years back." According to Chapter Ten and Ravnica - One and the Same, this occurred when Vraska was seventeen years old.
  96. Jace's origins originally took place before Ravnica block, but this has since been retconned. In Outlaws of Thunder Junction Epilogue 1: Bring the End, Part 1, Jace describes it as "decades" since he had heard his mother's voice. This story is described as "thirteen years" before the beginning of Outlaws of Thunder Junction Epilogue 2: Bring the End, Part 2.
  97. This story takes place when Chandra is eleven, and twelve years before Kaladesh.
  98. This story follows Narset between the age of six and at least sixteen, though if she became Khan around the same age as she became a Master, this story's beginning could be as many as nine years earlier.
  99. This story takes place "almost ten years before" the main story when Anafenza was 13 and Oret 23. In the present portion, she is now khan and he is graying.
  100. This story takes place one year before Kaito's Origin Stories.
  101. This story takes place when Kaito is fifteen.
  102. This portion of the story takes place one year after the main story.
  103. This story takes place after the Conflux.
  104. According to the D&D Guildmasters' Guide to Ravnica, Jace Beleren became the Living Guildpact in 10,075.
  105. This part of this story takes place one year before Shadows over Innistrad, the year after Rise of the Eldrazi and following the fall of Bala Ged.
  106. These stories take place while Anax is fifteen years old and still a prince.
  107. This story takes place from three months into Raissa's pregnancy until Xenagos is six.
  108. This story takes place from Surrak's youth until his ascension as Dragonclaw and First Father of the Temur.
  109. Although this cinematic is for Midnight Hunt, it features Jerren, who died in the Battle of Thraben during Eldritch Moon.
  110. According to Magic: The Gathering - The Visual Guide, this story occurs "a couple of years" after the Eldrazi were released in Awakenings.
  111. This story occurs as the Zendikari army is preparing for the Liberation of Sea Gate.
  112. This story occurs "hundreds of days, maybe a thousand," or about one to three years, after Chandra's previous visit to Zendikar in Awakenings.
  113. Avacyn's disappearance and return both occurred a year before this story.
  114. This guide takes place in 10,076, and before The Ledger of Hidden Fortunes.
  115. This story takes place "months" after the Battle of Thraben.
  116. This story takes place before Lathril's ascension to godhood and her binding afterwards.
  117. This story takes place over centuries, before Kaldheim.
  118. This section takes place "years earlier" than 4562, while the Consulate was still in power on Kaladesh.
  119. This game takes place after the Great Mending, the Battle for Zendikar, and Avacyn's madness, during the rise of the Cabal, and before the Hour of Devastation.
  120. This story takes place forty years after Nissa's Origin, twelve years after Chandra's origin, four years after Agents of Artifice, one year after The Gorgon and the Guildpact, six months after the announcement of the Inventor's Fair, and three months after The Promised End.
  121. The "Six Months ago" portion of this story takes place three years after Tezzeret's defeat in Agents of Artifice, and two years after he fought on Mirrodin.
  122. This story takes place 54 days after Born of Aether.
  123. This story takes place twelve years and seven months after Chandra's Origin, and about 2 months after Chandra's return to Kaladesh.
  124. This story takes place 22 days after In the Dead of Night.
  125. This story takes place four months before Jace boarded the Belligerent.
  126. ManaStrike takes place between Hour of Devastation and War of the Spark, as Bolas plans the war in his Meditation Realm.
  127. Jace, Alone takes place over the course of 40 days.
  128. This story begins one month after Jace boarded the Belligerent and ends "several weeks" later.
  129. This story takes place two years after the Legion of Dusk arrived on the continent of Ixalan and five months after Nicol Bolas sent Vraska to the plane.
  130. This story takes place two months after Jace's planeswalk attempt shortly after arriving on Ixalan, days after Huatli's first planeswalk, and later the same day as Jace's attempt in Something Else Entirely.
  131. This story takes place two months after the Powerstone activation in the previous story, and one month before the relaunching of the Weatherlight.
  132. This story takes place three months after Jace joined Vraska's crew.
  133. This story takes place at least two months after Ixalan block, but before the War of the Spark.
  134. This story takes place during the the first few months of the year on Ravnica. It mentions the killing of the Obzedat shortly before 24 Dhazo (April), although this same event occurs during the Autumn in The Gathering Storm. It is unclear if this is a retcon or if Autumn occurs during the first few months of the Ravnican calendar.
  135. This story takes place sometime after Theros Beyond Death.
  136. This story portion occurs "months after the War of the Spark".
  137. The Legendary Team-Ups of March of the Machine places Episode 5: The Battle for Kaldheim a year before New Phyrexia's Invasion of the Multiverse.
  138. This story takes place less than a month after the beginning of term.
  139. This story takes place less than three years after Shadows over Innistrad.
  140. This story features the first sunrise on Innistrad in months since Night Closes 'Round.
  141. This story takes place ten years after Episode 1.
  142. This story takes place five years after Agents of Artifice.

  145. This story occurs months into Liliana's second year teaching at Strixhaven.

  147. This story occurs "A few weeks. A month at the longest" before the Phyrexian attack on Urza's Tower.
  148. This story occurs "a handful of weeks" since the attack on the Mana Rig.
  149. This story takes place "a handful of weeks" after Saheeli arrived on Dominaria and began work on the Temporal Anchor.
  150. This story takes place a week after Elspeth arrived on Dominaria in Chapter 1.
  151. This story occurs directly after The Dark, before the Assault on New Phyrexia.
  152. Though Geth is killed in this story, he is mentioned as siding with the rebellion in Episode 3: Inconceivable Losses. It is possible that this story occurs after Episode 3, or that Mirran intelligence is out-of-date.
  153. This story occurs days after The Brothers' War - Chapter 5: Exodus, but takes place over months on time-distorted Zhalfir.
  154. This story occurs "one year prior" to Episode 6: The Ballad of Thieves and Thunderslingers.
  155. This story occurs immediately following Episode 5: Inevitable Resolutions.
  156. This story occurs immediately following March of the Machine - Episode 1: Triumph of the Fleshless, and "a few months" after Tamiyo's compleation in Episode 5: Threads of War.
  157. According to The Legendary Team-Ups of March of the Machine, Atraxa's invasion of New Capenna takes place "weeks" after Giada gives up her corporeal form in Episode 5: Hymn of the Angels.
  158. This story occurs "weeks" after March of the Machine - Episode 9: The Old Sins of New Phyrexia.
  159. This story begins 13 years after Jace’s Origin: Absent Minds, and ends when Jace is 29 years old, 9 years after parts of Agents of Artifice, 2 years and some months after the War of the Spark, 12 months after Wilds of Eldraine - Episode 5: Broken Oaths, at least 6 months after The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, and about 1 month after Episode 7: Rot Before Recovery.
  160. This story occurs at least six months after New Phyrexia's Invasion of the Multiverse.
  161. This story occurs about a month after Episode 2: Wandering Knight, Budding Hero.
  162. This story occurs "a few weeks" after Wilds of Eldraine - Episode 4: Ruby and the Frozen Heart and three years after Throne of Eldraine.

  169. This story takes place on the same day as the previous two, as well as three days later.

  178. This story occurs "thirty centuries" after a war between the Ironclaw Orcs and Benalia. As Benalia was founded around 3500 or later, this story must take place at least 3,000 years afterward.
