Urza's Tower was the principal stronghold and workshop of Urza in eastern Terisiare during the Brothers' War on the plane of Dominaria.[1] Although it was sacked in the aftermath of the war and lay abandoned for thousands of years, the structure itself survived intact and remains standing to the present day.
Description
Urza's Tower was concealed in a secluded, mist-shrouded vale somewhere within the Kher Ridges, located to the west or southwest of the city of Penregon.[2] The surrounding fog and its hidden location helped keep it isolated from the wider conflicts of the war.
According to legend, Urza constructed the tower as a place of seclusion where he could work away from the destruction and chaos of the Brothers' War. The tower reflected this intent in its detailed craftsmanship: its walls were accented with gold, decorated with ornate carvings, and equipped with assembly armatures for the creation of his machines. The construction was so precise that stone and metal seemed fused without visible seams or cracks, giving the impression that the building had been conjured whole rather than assembled by hand.[3]
The vale around the tower included a narrow greenbelt ring of trees, forming a natural boundary. Within this, a small copse of mitab vines had been planted and tended using the magic of the dryad Wrenn.[3]
History
During the Brothers' War, the tower served as one of Urza's principal engineering sites, where he designed and built mechanical constructs to continue his conflict with his brother, Mishra.
In the aftermath of the war, the tower gained the names Iron Tower and White Tower. Following the failed Siege of Penregon, the rising Church of Tal organized a crusade, intending to destroy Urza's former base. While they succeeded in smashing the remaining machines housed inside, the tower’s structure proved impervious to their efforts, and the crusaders instead moved on toward Mishra's Forge.[2][4][3]
More than four millennia later, Urza's Tower still stood in pristine condition despite its long abandonment. When visited by Teferi, Saheeli, and Kaya, its interior was desolate but structurally sound. One mystery surrounding the site was its continued avoidance by looters, bandits, or other mages over the centuries, despite the valuable location and resources it might have offered. Teferi attributed this unlikely preservation to little more than luck.[3]
During this visit, the planeswalkers, joined by Jodah, installed and activated Saheeli's Temporal Anchor in the tower's eastern wing, an area that had once served as Urza's grand showroom.[5] Saheeli also equipped the site with multiple defensive technologies, including automated mechanical soldiers, turret emplacements, mechanical dromedaries, and powerstone-based lances.[6]
