Storm Crane Monastery is a mobile sanctuary and monsatery of the Jeskai on Tarkir. Created from the salvaged remains of the ancient Sage-Eye Stronghold and Dragon's Eye Sanctuary, it serves as both a temple and a massive skyship, safeguarding the wisdom and traditions of the Ojutai brood after the devastation of the New Phyrexian Invasion. The monastery is led by Narset and acts as a haven for scholars, monks, and students, continuing the Jeskai’s legacy of enlightenment and adaptability in a changing world.

Description

The Storm Crane Monastery is an enormous wood-and-metal vessel, combining architectural elements of a mountaintop temple with the engineering of an ornate skyship. Its temple complex is adorned with sky-blue, curved eaves trimmed in gold, crowned by massive cinnabar sails that catch wind or mana currents when the monastery takes flight. While it can drift on lakes and rivers like a barge, the monastery’s true strength lies in its ability to ascend into the skies, carrying its community beyond the reach of terrestrial threats. Hidden within its reinforced belly is a Jeskai school where initiates study martial arts, meditation, and ancient lore under the watchful eye of Narset and the elder monks.[1][2]

History

After the fall of Dragon's Eye Sanctuary during the New Phyrexian Invasion, survivors of the Ojutai brood, led by Narset, salvaged what they could from the ruins of Sage-Eye Stronghold. Using ancient Jeskai craftsmanship and remnants of Ojutai’s roost, they constructed the Storm Crane Monastery as both a refuge and a mobile bastion of knowledge. Designed to protect students and monks from future threats, the monastery can lift off and sail the skies of Tarkir, continuing the Jeskai tradition of adapting wisdom to new challenges.[2]

In 4564 AR, Elspeth Tirel, now an archangel, arrived on the Storm Crane Monastery seeking Narset’s counsel about worsening dragonstorms threatening the Multiverse. Aboard the skyship, Elspeth shared memories of fallen friends like Ajani and Tamiyo, and warned of unnatural storms reshaping Tarkir’s land and dragons. Narset, burdened by her past failures and the unstable energies left in Ugin's wake, feared that intervening might worsen the threat.

Before they could plan, disaster struck: a wild dragon breached the monastery from below — an unprecedented attack. Narset and Elspeth fought side by side to protect the trapped students, with Elspeth diving into the dragon’s jaws to wound it while the monks evacuated the children. Together, they drove the beast away, but the monastery suffered heavy damage.

In the aftermath, Narset promised Elspeth an answer by dawn. That night, her trusted advisor Taigam urged her to turn Elspeth away for the safety of their people, claiming her presence drew the dragon. Torn between duty and compassion, Narset defied her council: at dawn, she informed Elspeth that the Jeskai could not officially help — but chose to leave with her, taking Tarkir’s wisdom into the wider fight against the storms consuming the Multiverse.[1]
