Story

Crescent Moon, by Jeff Gomez

A year and a half have passed since the end of Wayfarer, and the Elder Druid of Corondor is looking for Jared Carthalion. The druid runs into Yorgo, the ruler of the ruins of Arathoxia. Yorgo brings the druid to Jared, who is minding his lover Kristina as she is giving birth to their child. The Elder Druid reveals that he, like Jared himself, has the crescent-moon Mark of the Elder Druid, and has come to prepare the others for war. The Quirion exarchs Amadis and Finovar and Visoniary Kadesha, are all present when Kristina gives birth. Kristina gives birth to a daughter, and they name her Justina.[1]

Journeying Angel, by Art Holcomb

Ravidel pays a visit to Urborg to visit the local planeswalker Lord Windgrace. Ravidel tries to convince Windgrace to join his side in the coming war, telling a twisted story painting Jared Carthalion as the bad guy. It falls on deaf ears, as Windgrace turns out to be an isolationist. He reveals his ancestors came from Efrava, and that he has a rather negative interpretation of the events surrounding Jedit Ojanen, focusing on the fact that Jedit became a mercenary after leaving Efrava. He takes the stance that things would probably work out best if planeswalkers would stop trying to intervene. Windgrace even invokes Terrent Amese, the god worshiped by the Efravans. Ravidel leaves, not able to convince the panther warrior. He takes a chunk of Urborgan obsidian with him.[1]

The Swamp King, by D. G. Chichester

The Lord of House Khone is having a war council meeting, when Freyalise suddenly appears in his hall. She has adopted a new look, with chopped hair, and an eyepiece over one of her eyes, and she floats slightly above the ground. She has come to protect Corondor since she recognized that the Mox Beacon would soon summon a great danger - Tevesh Szat. Freyalise sees into the Lord of Khone's soul and sees why he hides it behind black metal. She understands his need for secrecy, as a soul like his could never fail. She promises him that his secrets are safe with her. Freyalise and the Lord of Khone summon Sol'Kanar the Swamp King and bind him. By doing this, any black magic Ravidel is going to use will flow to bolster Freyalise, giving her more resources to fight Szat with. She tells the Knight to inform Jared Carthalion that she will come to visit him soon to repay the debt she owed to House Carthalion.[1]

Dragon's Dance, by David Quinn, Kenny Martinez and Anibal Rodriguez

Eskil the White is living in the White Woods, still feeling he is not redeemed for the crimes of his ancestor Xarl, 4000 years in the past. He now senses coming danger and thinks that might be his chance at redemption. Suddenly, his hut explodes. The Ash Warlord Embereck has been dragged to Corondor by the Mox Beacon and Eskil is the first planeswalker he found. Embereck tells Eskil he is one of the Ash Warlords who emerged from within Dominaria through the mountain Oremon. After being dragged to Corondor, Embereck jumped to the conclusion that Eskil was the one who summoned him, thus prompting him to attack. Eskil calmly remarks that he wanted to redecorate his hut anyway, and dubs Embereck "Crusher of Cottages".

To protect the Woods, Eskil transports the two of them to the island of New Argive, which Embereck recognizes. Eskil manages to defuse the situation and gets Embereck to talk. The Ash Warlord explains that a thousand years earlier, he recovered the Golgothian Sylex from a sunken city nearby, and dueled Ravidel there. Embereck won the battle, but Ravidel pleaded for mercy and told a story about how he was dishonored and wanted the Sylex for revenge against those who had not allowed him to die. This convinced the more powerful planeswalker to hand over the Sylex to the Battle Mage.

Eskil is touched that an apparent brute like Embereck could act on mercy, then brings the two of them to the Mox Beacon, telling Embereck that it was Ravidel who created it and that Embereck himself has thus played a role in setting up the coming war. He also reveals that Ravidel broke his promise to not ruin Minorad and that Jared Carthalion has since destroyed the Sylex, allowing the Ash Warlord to finally stand against Ravidel. Embereck agrees to fight, though he darkly says that had he taken the Sylex that day, Dominaria would not necessarily have been a better place.[1]

Planeswalker in Amber, by Jeff Grubb and Rags Morales

Daria sits on the Null Moon, waiting for her father Taysir to arrive. She has been monitoring events on Corondor since she came to that land and met Jared Carthalion just as he ascended as a planeswalker. Unfortunately for her, two other planeswalkers have also chosen the Null Moon as their first stop on Dominaria. These two planeswalkers have a history with this place, and are the last people she should want to run into, especially given her ties with Taysir: Tevesh Szat, the Doom of Fools, and Leshrac, Walker of Night.

Szat is perfectly willing to kill Daria simply because she spied on him, but Leshrac warns that this will draw Taysir to them immediately and that he needs some time to prepare for that fight. So instead he puts the girl in an Amber Prison. With that done, Leshrac proposes conquering the world for old time's sake. Szat has a different idea, however. He will pick up where he left, and Dominaria will die by the turn of the near star.[1]

Wishes, Lies & Dreams, by D. G. Chichester and Mark Buckingham

Sandruu, Ravidel and Grenfell Mor are having a scuffle. Ravidel tells the others to hold, saying that their battle is a misunderstanding, then tries to flatter Sandruu, saying that he would be a great ally against Jared Carthalion. Sandruu has no interest in getting involved at first, but then Ravidel reveals that Jared has seduced Sandruu's former lover Kristina, even showing the minotaur some out-of-context images of Jared and Kristina in bed together. This is enough to send Sandruu into a rage, as Kristina has been on his mind the entire journey home from the distant plane Taysir had banished him to many years ago. Sandruu heads out to find Jared, while Ravidel gloats to Grenfell, saying that this is how to build an army.[1]

Dark Horizons, by Jeff Gomez

Jared Carthalion and the Elder Druid of Corondor discuss the coming war. The druid tells Jared that he must choose between the land and the stars. The Elder Druid knows he does not long for this world, and the crescent moon mark means Jared could follow him as the next Elder Druid, but if Jared sticks to being a planeswalker that cannot possibly be. So even with the war brewing, Jared has a big personal decision in his future.[1]
