Mirrodin's Core, called Tav Rakshan (Hall of the Eternal Sun) by the leonin, used to be a massive globular space within Mirrodin, utilized by Memnarch to control the outer world.[1]
Description
Mirrodin's Core could only be approached through five lacunae, one in each land of Mirrodin. At the center of the globular space, suspended in the air, was a blinding circle of bright light. This ball of pure mana was known as the Mana Core.[2] Mirrodin's Core provided a brilliant and otherworldly sight, with shining metallic surfaces everywhere, reflecting the intense light of the Mana Core. Living in it were many hundreds of Memnarch's artifact creatures and constructs. The Panopticon, once Memnarch's lair was also located here, just below the beaming Mana Core.[3]
It was from the Mana Core that the four suns emerged into the sky in Mirrodin's distant past, with the fifth being a later addition. This event puzzled both the plane's Guardian and its denizens, eventually leading to legends about the nature of the five satellites. Mycosynth towers also dotted the metal innards of the plane, though their arrival also used to be something of a mystery.[2] The truth was that the mycosynth was a product of the glistening oil Karn had unintentionally brought to the plane, which had created the mycosynth as the first step towards Phyrexianizing it. The existence of the suns was a result of Dominaria's time rifts, which destabilized Mirrodin's core, causing it to gradually discharge the five orbs of mana.[4]
The Ascension Web was a device used to transfer a planeswalker's spark, powered by the destruction of souls. It was constructed by Memnarch, who wanted to become a planeswalker like his creator, Karn. He managed to trigger the Ascension Web using the soul traps, but was destroyed and instead caused the Vanishing to occur.[5]
During the Phyrexian takeover of Mirrodin, the Phyrexians drilled holes into the core[6] and it became one of the three spheres of New Phyrexia.[7] In later development it became the eighth sphere called the Mycosynth Gardens.[8]
The Mycosynth Gardens
The Mycosynth Gardens are the eighth sphere of New Phyrexia. Towering columns of mycosynth grow unchecked here. Norn forbids any visitors to this and the lowest layer without her invitation, including other Praetors.[9]
Within this layer is a gateway leading into the Seedcore.[10] It appears as a piled-up structure of fungal strands that twists into a mimicry of entrails. It infects anything it touches. As someone approaches the gateway, it heaves, pulsing, before opening into a terrible hole into darkness ringed with waving tendrils.
