Kishla Village is a small fishing settlement built on stilts amid the swampy waterways of the Gudul delta on Tarkir. Known for its resilient community and rich aquatic environment, Kishla has played a significant role in local resistance against the Sultai brood’s oppressive rule. The village’s inhabitants live in harmony with the flooded landscape, relying on sustainable fishing practices to survive in the ever-changing swamp.
Description
Kishla Village is perched above the waterways of the Gudul delta, with wooden walkways connecting clustered huts raised on stilts. The surrounding swamps teem with life, supporting a delicate balance between human settlement and nature. Villagers like the Kishla Trawlers and the Kishla Skimmer are skilled fishermen who carefully manage fish populations to prevent depletion, treating their catch as a vital crop rather than a mere resource. Despite the rising waters that have flooded older structures and scattered ruins throughout the area, Kishla remains vibrant and adaptive. The villagers’ sustainable methods and sharp senses help them thrive in the challenging conditions of the Gudul delta swamps.[1]
History
Originally a quiet farming and fishing village, Kishla became a focal point of resistance during Silumgar's reign. When Silumgar’s forces attempted to seize the village’s harvest —threatening famine — an unlikely leader, the farmer Kotis, rallied the villagers into a rebellion. Their insurgency briefly claimed independence from Silumgar, but overwhelming reinforcements forced Kotis and his followers into the surrounding jungle, where they joined wider resistance efforts.[2]
Kotis’s story did not end there. Killed during the New Phyrexian Invasion, he was resurrected by the rebels through necromantic rituals, becoming one of the first undead known as a sibsig under the reformed Sultai's rule. Rising to become the Fangkeeper — the new leader of the reformed Sultai — Kotis embodies a pragmatic vision for justice and prosperity, counterbalancing the excesses of Silumgar’s decay. His leadership continues to inspire the people of Kishla and the Sultai brood at large.[2]
