Dalkovan cities are the mobile encampment-cities of the Mardu clan on the plane of Tarkir. Formed and dismantled in a matter of hours, these nomadic settlements reflect the Mardu’s disciplined, clan-wide fusion of civilian and military life.[1]

Description

Dalkovan cities are massive, highly organized camps that serve as both home and fortress for the Mardu. Each is led by a general of the Dalkovan Assembly, with all members — warriors, artisans, elders, and beasts alike — contributing to daily life and the clan’s defense. The Mardu erect lightning barriers, an ingenious blend of stormsinger magic and blacksmithing, to protect these cities from dragonstorms. Inside, communal spaces like the Thunder Stadium host markets, feasts, and competitions, while permanent landmarks such as Dragonsong Rock and shrines in regions like Goldengrave mark culturally significant sites.[1]

History

Following the fall of Kolaghan, the Mardu reorganized under new khans and generals, many of whom had led the rebellion or safeguarded Mardu traditions during the Phyrexian invasion. Since then, the Mardu have rejected permanent settlements in favor of their ancient nomadic ways, moving their dalkovans with the dragonstorms and across contested territory. Their code, the Decree of Thunder, binds these cities together under shared laws of loyalty, community, and survival. A dalkovan is more than a camp: for the Mardu, it is simply “home.”[1]
