History

Capture

During the time of the Brothers' War (in 35 AR), the Dark Prince Porros summoned the giant cockatrice called the Beast of the Hours, unleashing upon the countryside and decimated the armies of Mishra, whom Porros viewed as a false king. Mishra called for the Circle of songmages to destroy the beast, and Samor the Collector and some of his companions obliged. However, while they were attempting to lay the beast low, a discordant tone disrupted the ritual, forcing the songmages to change their spell to one of binding. The Beast of the Hours was locked into an Armageddon clock beneath Mount Sarraza. Unbeknownst to Samor, it was the traitor Porros who had sung the discordant tone.[1]

Pleased at this turn of events Mishra bid Samor to create an unbinding and commanding spell that he could threaten his brother Urza with. Samor unwillingly obliged, but before he could complete his spell, Porros interrupted him. The two got into a fight, and Porros cut Samor's throat, while Samor cursed Porros into becoming a taloned sand wraith. Enraged, Porros buried Sumifa beneath the desert. The Fall of Sumifa ensured that nobody knew how to release the Beast of the Hours from its prison.[1]

Release and banishment

During the Thaw (in c. 3050 AR), the Beast of the Hours was released by the songmage Ogwater Rifkin using the music from Samor's chronoclave, Ogwater's own four magical gemstones, the amulet inherited by Cheyne, Claria's namesong, and the hum from the Chimes. This caused the Chimes to vibrate so intensely that they were destroyed. The Beast of the Hours killed the orc Womba before Ogwater managed to use his renewed song magic to banish the creature from existence, back to wherever it was summoned from originally.
